Green looks to be ready for Orlando.
Jonathan Gilvoy of Draft Express observed Danny Green working out near his home and was impressed with some of the things he saw from hot perimeter shooting to his defensive effort. Granted it was a workout with his trainer but he apparently performed better than projected 2nd round pick Shan Foster who also works with the same trainer. This kind of report makes the Orlando draft camp even more interesting where Green is concerned and also puts at risk of Danny Green, Sr possibly being right in some of the things he said…which would be highly annoying.
Anyway, according to Green the younger, his decision to return to UNC will be based not only on his performance but “what his teammates decide to do.”
Why do I get the feeling this is not going to end well?

I’m strating to think that this is all about playing time when it comes to Danny Green. I think that if Wayne Ellington comes back Green is gone. Either way UNC will be hurting for shooters next season.
After being a McDonald’s All American, Danny probably should be upset at never being a starter in 4 years at UNC. In any event, he is too slow to be a 2 guard in the NBA right now, and too small to play the 3. One more year of demonstrating good decisions and improving his quickness could give him a shot at a first round pick next year. But if Danny can have a good workout and get drafted in the first round this year, more power to him. But will the Greens keep him in the draft one way or the other?

Sounds like that is a foregone conclusion. I even think that if the NBA does not call then he will play in Europe. Daddy needs that cash.
We should all accept the fact that Green/Ellington/Lawson are outta here. And we do have reason to worry about our wing/outside next year. The only thing that could benefit us is the extension of the 3 point line next year and hope that alters guards decisions to take one, making the college game more of an inside ordeal, in which we are flat out loaded. Also, we are forced into putting hope/faith in the development of Graves, and the impact of freshman Larry Drew. Please Marcus, this being your senior year, have fun and shoot the basketball when you are wide open. We should/could still end up in the 2-5 spot in the ACC, which ain’t all that bad considering our personelle losses.
It still is my hope that these kids will shine in the next level. Ellington may feel like he has more offensive freedom in the NBA. He is more of a slasher and can score in other ways than outside shots, unlike the Dukie JJ Redick. Danny Green still has excellent athletic ability and can play tough defense at times. Might be a good fit with the Spurs or a team of that character. Does he remind you of a Michael Finley type player? Lawson, although Karl (George) seems to have had some player issues in his NBA tenure, could be a good fit in Denver. I see him as having an opportunity there given the absence of a true pg, as Iverson is a shoot first kinda guy, and Camby/K. Martin should be able to allow Lawson the lane to the basket. I know I am probably wishful thinking on all of this, but there definetely is opportunity.

“Green’s decision on whether he returns, he says, depends on his performance as well as what his teammates decide to do.”
This scares me as well. The more I learn the more I see Danny riding off into the sunset. Now, whether that is the Euroleague, D-League, or NBA sunset I do not know.
Things that stood out to me from the article:
1. Danny has a sore ankle, which may limit his performance in Orlando, which, correct me if I am wrong, is not finalized.
2. DraftExpress ranks Danny as 28 in the 2009 draft, and Gilvoy notes that most scouts and execs think he will be returning to UNC for his senior year.
3. Even though the workout synopsis paints Danny in a good light, Gilvoy never asserts anything extremely positive about Green. This continues to beg the question Is Danny as good as or better than 60 other players, therefore getting him drafted somewhere? With the depth of this year’s draft, I sincerely doubt it.
Well, if he is indeed gone, best wishes. If there is any team that I like to see picked to not finish at the top (either in the ACC or NCAA tourney) it is our beloved Tar Heels. Those years when we are everyone’s favorite scare me. I take delight in those seasons in which we are picked to finish near-the-top or middle-of-the-pack that make me smile and the haters cringe.
Even though I have remained optimistic throughout the workout and pre-workout periods, I have always prepared for all of these guys to bolt. Regardless, that would be three former Heels in the NBA (or at least two, depending on where Danny would go). I want to see more Heels when I (scarcely) watch the pros.
Yes, next year’s team, without Lawson, Ellington, and Green, are full of question marks, but which team isn’t? I would rather take my chances with our returning team than any other team in D-I next year. Duke will be tough, but Greg Paulus is their floor general. Wake will be loaded, but young. UCLA and Memphis have great recruits, but unproven chemistry. I think that we might be looking at a dominant year for the Big East, in that Louisville, Georgetown, West Virginia, Pittsburgh, and (most significantly) Connecticut figure to be major players in the title hunt.
NBA pre draft camp is on then ESPNU schedule for Wednesday and Thursday afternoon. Good luck to all of our guys but then all come back to school please!

On the plus side, most of the mock drafts have Ellington dropping further and further on the list, so it looks like we should be getting him back. I, for one, would be very happy to have Wayne back.
