I think any reasonable Tar Heel fan wants what is best for Ty and Wayne and Danny as individuals. Or, that's the way it should be. Too often fans grab their identity through sports figures and teams (see: Kentucky Basketball) and everything sours from there. No one wins in that sort of scenario.

My issue with Ty is not that he may go, but that he makes blanket statements concerning all Tar Heel fans, like we are a breed of selfish maniacal fans with no regard for anyone except winning. From the Carolina supporters I know (and I know a lot) this is simply not true.

And the media plays on this devisive slant and tries to make people see what is not reality.

And then you have the Danny Green's of the world adding fuel to the fire by TALKING ALL OF THE TIME.

What's a Tar Heel to do?

Bottom Line: support the players. Do it objectively and point out unhealthiness, but support the players and the teams and the coaches. EVERYONE should exercise loyalty and circle the light blue wagons.

THF-

I completely agree. Imagine if the internet would have been thriving in the early 80s? How would the fanatical members of the Tar Heel supporters reacted to the early departures of both Worthy and Jordan? Better yet, what about J.R. Reid? Actually, in today's climate, J.R. would have left after his freshman season. You know what, outside of helping UNC win the 1989 ACC tournament title, I don't know if his sophomore and junior campaigns were all that noteworthy. I just thank my lucky stars that Dean passed on Chris Mills during that time period!

Back to Ty Lawson. THF, you said it all. This kid could have gone after his freshman season. Judging by his comments, he seems to be hurt a bit by the backlash. I would be too. Perhaps some fans were making ligitimate points; specifically, Ty would most likely be a lottery pick in 2009, but that is beside the point. Yes, if Ty came back then UNC, with perhaps Ellington and Green, would have perhaps one of the greatest teams in school, if not NCAA, history on paper. Everything is happening for a reason and bigger wheels have been set into motion. I think that we are on the verge of something special (over the next few seasons) and we had better start acting (collectively) like a deserving fan base. Look at the Red Sox fans. The true blue fans suffered for years and now they have been joined by every other Midwestern white boy who happens to be frustrated with his own team's inability to Yankee-up and buy a championship. Now the Sox fans, like Yankee fans, feel as though they are entitled to be arrogant and patronizing. The fact is that they are spoiled with their city's recent success and seem to have forgotten what it was like to be the lovable losers. Good for them in the success department, but act like you have been there. The same could be said about the very Tar Heel fans who are critical of Lawson. I equate many UNC "fans" to the large contingent of "fans" who suddenly support either the Yankees or Red Sox when they are in the World Series. These are the "fans" who start their support once success has been delivered and will ride that wave until the first truly noticeable defeat. Maybe we have shaken off a few freeloaders in the wake of the Kansas Debacle.

We have a great team returning with or without these kids coming back. We will have a great team for next year and as far as one can look down the road. Let Lawson be. Thank him for providing us with 1.65 years of solid (at times spectacular) play and wish him the best at the pro level. I would hate to think that it was a few bad seeds that spoiled a potential return for Lawson.

Ty Lawson-we love you.

Ty Lawson-we would love to have you back, but we want the best for you professionally.

Haters and freeloaders-please stick to supporting the Red Sox, or Duke for that matter. Unfortunately, many of you will be back once the team of Ed Davis, Larry Drew, John Henson, Dexter Strickland, Tyler Zeller, Will Graves, The Wear Twins, and others absolutely CRUSH.

Very good analysis THF. I just wish the lunatic fringe could read this and be half-way intelligent enough to absorb it. While I think the vast majority of Tar Heel fans "get it" more so than most fan bases, we do have our reality-challenged faction that personifies more of the Kentucky and Evil Empire mind set. I hope Ty and Wayne are aware that most of us undertand their situations and can accept whatever decision they make even while we wish for ourselves that they choose to return for one more season. Green is a bit of a "loose cannon" but he will be welcomed back into the fold if he chooses to stay. Either way we will have a team at UNC next season and most of us will suport them in our normal positive fashion!

CM,

Yes and one of the questions I heard on the audio was concerning Th staying and which led to Green talking about TH having money.(another time he should watch what he says but I digress) I thought the question was just plain stupid. Whether a guy is NPOY or not has little bearing in his draft stock or how others might be perceived.

Spot on, THF... spot on!

I will also add that Ty, Wayne, and Danny have the unfortunate timing of potentially leaving early the same year Tyler Hansbrough, the reigning NPOY and one of the most revered players in UNC history, decided to return for his senior season. I think that warps a lot of peoples opinions on what may or may not be the correct decision.
