I think often times students who get in trouble will go out of their way to hire lawyers on the sly so parents don't find out. The result is often the cheapest representation money can buy. Needless to say, you get what you pay for. I'm not saying this is necessarily the case with RG, but I have numerous ohter friends that had the same thing happen to them with these fly-by-night lawyers in Chapel Hill (in many cases it was the SAME lawyer). While a simple mistake is one thing, preying on college students and HABITUALLY not doing your job is another. Unprofessional at best, grounds for disbarment at worst. That's a high volume business and, unlike murder trials or corporate deals, traffic infractions and the like can slip through the cracks. I have a buddy who is an attorney in KC. He got pulled over on his way into work one morning for a traffic infraction and they arrested him. He had an outstanding warrant that stemmed from a citation for not having gutters on a house he was restoring with some buddies. (He never received the notice, which was mailed to the house he was restoring--no mailbox there.) He nearly had to spend the weekend in jail because there were no more hearing slots available until Monday; they slipped him in.
