THF-

"As it turns out, we ended up nothing to show for those six years except a lot of heartache and 8-20."

There were some memorable victories here and there in the '99-'04 era, but it really sucked to lose the sexy the way we did. 1998 was all about Duke's "chemistry" versus UNC's "athletes." 2005 was the same 'ol situation. But 1998 was when Duke hatred went beyond obsession for me, with all of the ESPN love and the Wojo/Rat hug at the end of the game.

However, Wojo did not play in a single Final Four contest.

the '98 team was a far better defensive unit...I'd pay good $$ to see Tyler vs Jamison in the paint though. I remember the Clemson game...there was some mock "cheers" for Ricky Barnes as he head-faked it to the scorers table to check in. The Fla State was an absolute blast too.

Makhtar was a waste and Brendan Haywood could've used more PT for late season depth. If he had stayed another season...gotta wonder if Dean gets title # 3 though.

Hmmm... so I guess that puts the 2008 team at #4 in this little countdown. 2008 vs. 1998 for the last runner-up spot is just about right. That would be a good game. I think I would choose 2008 over '98 as well just because of better depth.

I always liked the Tar Heels, but this was the first team that I followed closely after I was accepted into school at UNC in Nov. 1997. I looked forward to years of getting to see stars like Vince and Antawn. Little did I know that we would have a big drought of that type of star power . . .

Exactly. Opposite of Steve Bucknall, who seemed to progress with the season.

Yeah, Shammond had a sweet stroke. But we relied on him way too much as our main outside shooter. That's the problem when these guys go cold.

That sounds wrong... didn't mean to dump on Shammond. He gave us a lot of great basketball. The O.T. win over GTech was awesome with him knocking in over 40, I believe, and he had some great play in the ACC Tourney as well.

This was a fantastic team, and VERY fun to watch. Shammond and Final Fours, they just shouldn't be in the same sentence.
