totally off topic, but DailyDoc's comment on offensive pass interference made me think of something. Wonder if Coach K has started working with the blue devils' defensive backfield to teach them the fine art of flopping? Surprised he hasn't been doing that for years.... wonder how many offensive pass interference calls the dookies have missed out on during the last 25 years or so.

Just got home from work and our game is on ESPN-U. In all the talk of the final play, what was lost was the blatant offensive pass interference that was not called on the previous jump-ball play in the end zone.

Just a thought...

Yes the whistle was blown just before UNC players recovered the fumble....however this is what else the rule book says:

No other plays or officiating decisions are reviewable. However, the replay official may correct egregious errors.

In other words there may be a whole slew of rules concerning reviews but in a situation like that the officials have the right to review the entire play and have the correct calls made out of it.

THF, I think what the anonymous "Jayhawk" commenter is saying is that the rule says the play is not reviewable if either of two things happen:

1. The fumble was not immediately recovered.

2. The officials blow the ball dead.

While I agree that the "Jayhawk" completely misunderstood the meaning of "immediate" here -- it means that the players try to get the fumble as soon as the ball is free, "Jayhawk", not that they have to recover the ball within a short-yardage radius (that notion is laughably absurd) -- the rule does suggest that condition 2 must also be false for the play to be reviewable. I don't personally remember if the officials blew the whistle on that play or not, but all the Notre Dame fans are saything that they did (big surprise, huh?), so it may have been that condition 1 was false but condition 2 was true, making the play non-reviewable.
