ACC Weekly Awards: Nicks and Burney

No brainers on both.

Via the ACC:

OFFENSIVE BACK—Hakeem Nicks, North Carolina, WR, 6-1, 210, Jr., Charlotte, N.C.
In North Carolina’s 45-24 victory over No. 23 Boston College, Nicks became the first Tar Heel to score four touchdowns in a game since 2006. He had a career-high three touchdown receptions (26, 40 and 43 yards) in the second quarter and scored on a 12-yard run in the fourth quarter. Nicks finished with eight catches for 139 yards receiving and three carries for 31 yards. It was his fourth 100-yard receiving game of the season and the ninth of his career.

DEFENSIVE BACK—Kendric Burney, North Carolina, CB, 5-9, 185, So., Jacksonville, N.C.
Burney intercepted two passes, broke up a pass and posted eight tackles, including one for a 2-yard loss, in UNC’s 45-24 win over No. 23 Boston College. With 3:45 remaining in the first half, Burney intercepted a Chris Crane pass on the boundary to give the Tar Heels possession on the Eagle 44-yard line, eventually leading to a North Carolina touchdown. On Boston College’s first possession of the second half, Burney stepped in front of the receiver and weaved his way 37 yards to the Eagles’ 1-yard line to set up a Tar Heel touchdown.

This is the Hakeem Nicks we had been waiting for, especially with the loss of Brandon Tate.  UNC will need more of this kind of play going into the final four games of the season.  Burney has been doing this all season and he was very close to scoring a TD on that runback which was one of the more impressive returns I have seen considering how many times he was almost tacked.  UNC now has 17 INTs on the season, four returned for a TD and a few others returned deep in the opposing team’s territory.

Off-topic question for the off week: Assuming Yates is ready to play in time for the GaTech game, who gets the start at QB, and/or how does Coach Davis allot playing time? The only certainty is that Paulus gets to relay signals. Let the backseat coaching begin.

  • QB controversy in Chapel Hill!

Let me answer my own question. Start Sexton and let him play until he has helped build a lead of 7 to 10 points or greater. That way Yates can come into the game with the pressure off somewhat. Or, start Sexton and let him play until it appears that whatever he’s doing isn’t really working—think the 2nd and 3rd quarters at Charlottesville—judging this over the course of 3 or 4 possessions, and then give the ball to Yates to see what he can do. Again, I believe this scenario puts less pressure on Yates and will help him be more confident and therefore successful. And to reiterate, Paulus only comes in if and only if it’s the 4th quarter and the ‘Heels need to run out the clock with a few running plays and/or the victory formation.

  • We probably need for Paulus to develop. At his current rate, I’d trust the incoming qb in next year’s draft as much as him right now. I’d prefer if he’d sit on the bench, much like Cam did, and grow from there. I really don’t like to insert multiple qb’s in any particular game. There have been previous games this year in which Cam may have looked a little off, but out of having no other option, he stayed in the game and made great decisions that have allowed us to win. I’d continue to go with Sexton at this point, and bring in TJ in games that it is out of reach, either by us winning big or in a loss. I do think it might hurt us some to bring him in next year, not having played a game before season. He does need to get his feet wet before season’s end. This is a tough call. I would just use TJ very sparingly.

  • I agree THF. No brainers on both!!!
