Clemson Fires Tommy Bowden[UPDATED]

UPDATE: Apparently Bowden offered to resign and Clemson accepted.  Also, Clemson’s AD still thinks they can win the ACC.  Not unless Clemson wins out and Wake loses three games.

Should have taken the Arkansas job…

You know what will kill you as a coach on the hot seat?

Laying an egg on Thursday night.  Just asked The Coach Who Shall Not Be Named.  UNC’s 23-0 loss at UVa two years ago moved Dick Baddour to finally pull the trigger on a coaching change.  Tommy Bowden runs into the same problem because those Thursday night games are major exposure and it gives the athletic director the whole weekend to think about it.

You know what will kill a coach named Bowden on the hot seat?

Playing Wake Forest.  In 2006 Wake smacked FSU 30-0 in Tallahassee and the following week much maligned Seminole offensive coordinator Jeff Bowden resigned at the behest of the boosters who gave him serious cash just to go away and never bother them again.  Now Tommy Bowden has been fired after losing to Wake Forest 12-7.

Wake Forest Football: Getting Bobby Bowden’s sons axed since 2006.

That’s one expensive decision, but probably the right call. Now they can hire that Neinas guy and get a early jump on the coaching carousel, just like you guys did. Who’s next to get canned in college football, Fulmer or Tuberville?

  • Fulmer is probably gone for you have an issue there. He has been in the job so long and actually won a title, you really cannot just toss him to the curb like Clemson did Bowden. Some respect is owed so I expect that will be a late season deal, perhaps even a resignation to give him one last hurrah.

Tuberville played the “fired an assistant” card but I am getting the feeling that will not insulate him.

Don’t forget Robinson in Syracuse. I think he is gone once the next game is played, but then again, SU (with a 8 and 33 record) isn’t going to weigh too much with the top coaches in the country.

based on some stuff I have seen this evening, it appears that Tommy actually resigned. Guess he decided that with the season going down the tubes, might as well quit in the middle, so he can wipe his hands of the mess and get himself another job next year.

Also, it seems that if Clemson can turn their season around, they might end up getting Torbushed. Word is that if Dabo can make something of the season, the AD says the coaching decision will be easy.

Clarification question – can it be considered a “Torbushing” if the assistant takes over halfway through the season? Or does it only apply if the assistant gets one shot in the bowl game?

You wonder when schools will realize that Torbushing long-time assistants is not a good idea — it didn’t work for us, it didn’t work for State (Mike O’Cain), and it certainly doesn’t look to be working for West Virginia (Bill Stewart).

  • Torbushing which rolls of the tongue better than O’Caining I guess is usually in response to the players. In my opinion it is a bad idea to allow 18-22 year old kids to dictate this stuff since they are operating completely in terms of loyalty and with an emotional attachment to coaches they spend hours and hours with every week.

And I suppose you can not call this Torbushing if you promote the guy and give him seven games to prove himself. The problem with UNC and WVU is they allowed a great bowl win to decide the coaching future though in the case of Torbush that was not a bad hire on the surface considering how good the UNC defense was.
