my son and I were there too--if I had known you were going we'd have tried to hook up. North side is a bummer when the sun is out!

I think Kenan is loud on a more consistent basis (at least lately), but the Dean Dome is louder in spurts. I've been to some bball games (Clemson last year, Dook a few times, that comeback against State in 1997) in the Dean Dome where my ears were ringing from the noise. To me it doesn't get any better than that. You can feel the electricity and you don't just think the Heels are going to win, you KNOW they will.

You're right about the ND crowd, Wilson. That's about as loud as I've heard it for that long in many years, and I've only missed a handful of home games during the past 7 years or so. The BC crowd was pretty good considering the noon start and the crappy weather (and the crappy 1st quarter).

Glad you made it, THF. You should've been there for Notre Dame if you thought the crowd was loud on Saturday. I'll agree that the Dean Dome has matched, loudness-wise, what Kenan can do, but it is much more inconsistent. We yell on every defensive down, which is more than I can say about a lot of basketball games.

Ron Cherry is a joke. There's been some horrible officiating in Kenan this year, but yesterday was the absolute worst. Check out Carolina Water Cooler's note about him.

I have a few thoughts:

- The bell that's used to pump up the crowd is that of the bell tower. From what I hear (I'm a student and am always at the games, so haven't seen first-hand), you can hear it from up to 3 miles away if conditions are right, just like I sometimes hear the normal quarter-hourly chimes from my place.

- Everyone here has mentioned that Kenan is always a better atmosphere than the Dean Dome, and I think that yall have just not been to the right games over there. Even Late Night two days ago rivaled some of the better (and louder) crowds that I've ever seen. I am fortunate to have been to over 75% of the games (including Dook) over the course of my life, and there have been a few games that the atmosphere would have been unmatched, even across the country. A few older Dook games, the Wake Forest triple-OT game from late 2003 (even though we lost), even a recent Kentucky game have all had amazing crowds.

You're right, though, on a given day, Kenan has a better, more "harmonious" atmosphere. And it depends much, much less on who we're playing and how close the game is.

Kenan is a great place for football and THF, I actually think the BC game had the lamest atmosphere of year so far. It certainly picked up as we started to put a whuppin on the Eagles. Night games against a good opponent are the best.

* I hate this for you, but apparently you never got to feel the anticipation of Brandon Tate getting ready to return a kick. It totally sucks that we've lost that weapon.

* I love the "bells" I don't care if proud Tar Heel John Bunting did come up with the theme

* Our next game against GT is incredibly important and I think UVA did us a favor yesterday. UVA has a difficult schedule ahead. VT is out of QB's. Miami needs to lose one and we need to win out.....The division title is within reach!

* Hakeem Nicks!

* Ditch the "prevent"

Glad you were there to see it in person, THF. It really is a beautiful place to watch college football, and there is something to be said for the intimacy of BKS.

I do have to comment on one of your observations, however. I think the bell on 3rd down is obnoxious. It is a holdover from the era of the Coach Who Shall Not Be Named and his theme one year of urging the team to "answer the bell". Along with most vestiges of that regime, I would like to see the bell purged as well.

No doubt JB, there was a special atmosphere at Carmichael, especially when you put the students so close to the action. That's part of what I loved about our two trips to Kenan this year. That Tar Pit never stops making noise. It's got to be a big boost for the team, and they keep the stadium rocking.

I also agree with THF about seeing all that blue in the stands. It's awesome.

I have really enjoyed the games I have been able to attend at Kenan. There was a great atmosphere at all the games I have seen there, unlike at the Dean Dome when people sit and seldomly cheer while we are running spectacular plays and being up by 20 points. I don't think we had that problem at our older facility.
