The N&O reports TJ Yates is out of the walking boot, cast and has no sign of a limp. Yates is working out but no timetable has been given for his return. Also of note in the article is Butch Davis’ non-commitment to either Yates or Cam Sexton once the former returns. Davis says he is waiting for Yates to practice again before making any determination on “the guy that gives you the best chance to win…”
The original assessment was six weeks which is next Saturday, an off weekend for the Heels. That is followed by a crucial showdown with Georgia Tech that could make or break any hope UNC has left of winning the Coastal(assuming they knock of BC.) GT also sports a fairly stout defensive line that could give the UNC pass protection trouble. So, there are risks involved. UNC needs to win the game and Yates might be the best QB to do that. On the other hand, it would be his first game on a newly healed ankle fracture facing a defense that could end up pressuring extensively.
Decisions like this are the ones that making running a college football program so tough.

I think either quarterback would be fine, and won’t be as important as Davis’s defensive calls at the end of games if they are close. In both the Notre Dame game and with Virginia he resorted to a 3 man rush at the end of the game which didn’t come close to pressuring the quarterback and allowed each team to march down the field to the goal line. He didn’t learn a thing from the Notre Dame game when he allowed Clausen to throw at will, and as we all know, they almost scored. He did the same thing, 3 man rush, no pressure, on Virginia’s last drive which allowed them to score and tie the game. I think Coach Davis has done a great job so far; I just don’t understand changing the defense (which has worked well for the whole game) to a “prevent” type of thing which obviously doesn’t work with this team.
