I know, I know. You have to count your blessings as a Duke fan. I think they know they got outlplayed tonight, with the exception of free-throw attempts of course. Either Duke is worse than we thought, or that Rhode Island team is a top 25 team, because they played some ball tonight.

Come on JB, this was Dook in Cameron. Did you expect the officials to let mighty Dook lose to Rhode Island on Coach K court? Plus, the Devils only shot TWICE as many free throws as RI, in a game that RI led almost the whole way. That makes perfect sense, right?

Not to change the subject, but did anyone see the officiating enable Duke to comeback & win against Rhode Island tonight? Rhode Island led most of the game. Kyle Singler drew two fouls in the last 2 minutes of play that would have resulted in possession changes if it wasn't called, and after looking at it, you will see that homecourt advantage played its roll. Also, after seeing the way Rhode Island played offense tonight, most likely those possessions would have resulted in points for that team. Now you contrast those fouls that Singler received & was granted by the officials to how Tyler gets treated on plays that do not draw an official's eye & it will make you damn mad!

It looks to me like there is still a chance for us to win the Coastal. If Miami, UVA, and VT all lose another game, then we're in the driver's seat again (assuming we beat State and Dook). I know those are long odds, but VT and UVA play each other, Miami has to go to GT, and UVA plays Clemson. We don't deserve a shot at the ACC title, but then again who does?

After having some time to absorb the Maryland loss, I'm slowly coming back to reality. We have a very good chance at finishing 9-3 and playing in a good bowl. If that turns out to be the case, then I'd say we overachieved, especially considering the loss of Yates and Tate.

There was also the Gator Bowl unless you're a lot older than I think. It's been held continuously since 1946 (1945 football season).

But I do get your point. What are there 34 or so bowls now and just about any team that wins six games gets into one?

The unfortunate truth is that the league IS mediocre at best. The even more unfortunate truth is that this includes us.

When I was a kid, there were four bowls: Orange, Sugar, Cotton and Rose. They were played on New Year's Day, not over a three week period surrounding New Year's Day, and the teams selected were all typically top-notch.

This year's Carolina team is anything but top-notch. There has been considerable progress, absolutely. Their play seems much more determined and focused, and every now and again even exciting. But a top-tier team they are not. Part of this is due to the loss of the spectacular Brandon Tate, but most of it is due to the fact that we're not quite there yet.

I'm thrilled with the direction of the program. Still, this year's team actually doesn't deserve to go to a big-time bowl (and of course it won't). This is just as well. Can you imagine what Oklahoma or Florida or USC would do to us? Yikes!

I never liked the creation of these corporate-named bowls that quite transparently exist only because they bring in more dough -- but dilute to an embarrassing degree the quality of post-season competition. I mean, really, is there a whole lot of pride in playing in the CarQuest dot com Humanitarian Bowl (or whatever the heck it is)?

The day may well be coming when our team will have earned its way to some serious post-season play. I'll doubtless watch whatever oddly-named bowl they wind up in this year, but sans the illusion that we have a "bowl-worthy team" in the sense that phrase used to convey.
