The justification for these bowls-for-nobodies is (1) that they bring in some extra dough for the football programs, and (2) they are a good investment for the sponsoring corporation -- a good investment in that their value as advertisement will enhance to a profitable degree the sales of tires or computers or insurance or whatever it is that they're peddling. Even assuming that proposition (2) is correct, which I certainly do not (I mean, how many people actually watch these minor bowls?), it is a woefully inadequate justification for putting them on. Bowls should be a reward for outstanding play during the season. Not a single ACC team, unfortunately including ours, meets that description. If their pride exceeded their desire for the extra buck, every one of them would sit home. Since it doesn't, they won't. And sad to say, I'll be just as guilty of watching the Mediocrity Bowl -- or all 10 or 20 of them or whatever there are -- as anyone else. Bring on basketball!!!
