In effort to help those who are apparently color blind from starting at a certain shade of red for too long THF offers this handy comparison between UNC’s new navy blue jersey and the shade of blue used by Duke.
NORTH CAROLINA NAVY BLUE
DUKE ROYAL BLUE
If this guide is unable to help you in discerning between the two colors please consult your physician or better yet, take your head out of your rear end.

I wasn’t too fired up about the navy blue jerseys (loved the navy pants BTW) until I saw them. They are an excellent option and I have subsequently returned my head to it’s normal location ;>)
For anyone laboring under the illusion that Dook Blue = Navy Blue, the fact is Dook Blue = Prussian Blue.
Clipped & pasted from: http://library.duke.edu/uarchives/faqs/duke_blue.html
The origin of Duke Blue
On September 23, 1965, the Executive Committee of Duke’s Board of Trustees adopted Prussian blue as Duke’s official color. We know of no other official action on the matter of school colors.
“I have subsequently returned my head to it’s normal location ;>)”
Sorry, Wilf, have to ask, Is your head’s NORMAL position in or out of your A$$???
THF, I want to thank you for addressing this topic. There is a huge difference between Navy and Royal blue. If you just don’t like the new jerseys (I personally am a fan) that’s one thing but the argument that it’s too close to Dook’s colors is ridiculous.
On another note, we did a whole lotta winning this saturday. Keep it up boys.
I do not like the jerseys. The britches are alright. Next thing you know we’ll have black ‘alternate’ unis. It’s a slippery slope…
I loved the jerseys. They looked sharp. Didn’t we wear that color in our football jerseys way back in the day? Like the 50′s or so.
The reports from the game were that the players really enjoyed the navy uniforms. If I were them, I’d use the navy jerseys as the primary and occassionally use the carolina blue jersey, a la San Diego Chargers.
HP, the majority of time… Out.
Clearly they aren’t Dook jerseys, and I think that they are good looking uniforms. But… I still love Carolina Blue! I wish they’d figure out a way to accessorize the Carolina Blue jerseys with the navy color, so here’s hoping they will experiment a bit and try to please everyone
Just a thought: Are the critics of navy blue the same ones you see at Kenan or the Deandome wearing navy caps with the light blue NC? Haven’t heard them knock the baseball unis. And Choo Choo Justice didn’t seem to have a problem with navy blue.
I vote for navy. Anyway when we wore the pants at Rutgers, it turned out well.
I think we should go all navy versus NC State…really screw with them.
I am a big supporter of the baby blue. It just radiates more color, and offends opposing teams. I will deal with the navy as long as they are winning. How about that?
I remember the last time navy blue was used for football uniforms was in the Dick Crum era. The navy looks OK to me, but has anyone supposed that it could be a psychological boost to the players wearing a darker color? Studies have shown a mental edge in sports for teams with darker colored uniforms. It’s the same reason football players put black paint under their eyes. You can argue that the paint is meant to cut down on glare, but really it boils down to face painting and being a warrior.
Davis said himself that the players were pumped up when they showed up in the locker room with new Navy jerseys.
BrooksJ & dj_joek:
What I think I heard the announcers say on TV during Saturday’s game was this was the 1st time the Heels have worn Navy Blue jerseys since 1960.
Personally, I don’t recall seeing Carolina Navy Blue jerseys, in person or on TV, except photos of Choo Choo Justice and those photos were black & white . . .
BTW as an “old school” Tar Heel fan I really, really like the Navy Blue jerseys and also like (but not really, really like) the Navy Blue pants.
On the other hand, I don’t want to see Ol’ Roy break out Navy Blue uniforms for the hoops guys any time soon.
Lee Pace says the Heels last wore navy blue in the last game of the 1959 season (Carolina 50 Dook 0) and haven’t worn them since – until Saturday. http://tarheelblue.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/111008aaa.html (Scroll down nearly to the end of the article).
In the previous post I should have said “navy blue jerseys” instead of “navy blue”. Apologies to all for my snafu.
As someone has probably already pointed out, the jerseys were the same color as the letterman jackets the ‘Heels have had for years. I personally prefer the Carolina Blue shirts, partly because the color is more traditional (at least since ’60, which is as long as I’ve been around), and partly because I thought the light blue helmets looked odd with the dark jerseys. It also seems like a gimmick that everybody else is doing and we should be setting trends, not following them.
That said, when the boys came out last Saturday I left my television, went to the closet, pulled out my dark Carolina jersey and changed promptly. Can’t argue with the results.
As I said before, I have a navy hat with a Carolina blue interlocking NC on it. The color is legit for us to use in football but in basketball the Dean Dome would be burned to the ground if they ever used any navy in the basketball jerseys.
I have a navy blue hat with a white “C” on it. IIRC it’s very similar to the one the Tar Heel baseball team wore when I was at UNC.
I wear it to the golf course about four times a year; virtually every time someone asks me what the “C” stands for. I tell them it stands for UNC. Nobody believes me. Then I take the hat off turn it around for them to see the “CAROLINA” embroidered there. Then they sort of believe me, but not really. Of course none of these folks are UNC alumni and most are people who moved down here from the rust belt.
I bought the hat in BKS a few years ago.
