UNC 115 Chaminade 70

Did everything they were supposed to, especially with about four minutes left in the first half on.  Since it was a DII team we can glean nothing from the experience other than career highs for JB Tanner and Justin Watts who both had nine.

Tyler Hansbrough was held out but because Roy did not want to do three games in a row.  The intention was to play him the next two games but even that is in jeopardy because Hansbrough tweaked his left ankle in practice.  I am going to assume at some point the injuries will stop.  I just hope it is not March or so when that happens.

With the exception of three point defense, I thought UNC looked pretty good last night.

Lawson did a good job distributing and only took a couple of suspect shots. Green, Graves, Thompson and Davis all showed impressive athleticism. Graves and Thompson both look to be in better shape this year. Davis and Thompson both looked excellent around the basket.

I was impressed with the teamwork and unselfishness of the effort and I especially enjoyed watching the final group of players to enter the game. They seemed a notch above pure wrap-up caliber and did an excellent job. I was glad to see Frasor finally hit a pretty three pointer and Ellington and Lawson and Green all looked better from outside.

All in all, a solid effort, regardless of the opposition.

On an unrelated, sad note, one of the commentators mentioned that 1977 Final Four star, Mike O’Koren was the assistant head coach for the Washington Wizards. This was unfortunate timing as both Eddie Jordan and O’Koren were fired by the Wizards that morning. Hopefully, Mr. O’Koren will land on his feet and be back in coaching soon.

    Some quick observations:

    1. Graves looks quicker. And where did those hops come from?
    2. Davis looked like he could be a great shot blocker. And that mini-hook shot looks pretty nice and soft.
    3. Watts looks like he could be a MAJOR contributer in a couple of years. Great quickness and athleticism.

Tonight’s the real competition. This injury thing is starting to annoy me.

  • Allegedly Graves lost some weight but he is listed at 245 which was the same as last season. Maybe it was a tradeoff of fat for muscle which would making him leaner and stronger. That dunk in the first half showed some serious athleticism.

Does Ty look chunkier to anybody?

thanks for the info on O’Koren william–major props to Jay Bilas for articulating the relative spotlight on one of UNC’s unsung (in some circles) past heroes–he did make quite the splash as a freshman.
