UNC Basketball/Football Blowout Open Thread

Either you have the DVR recording one and watching the other, are going to a sports bar or found some new fangled way of being able to watch two things at once sucessfully.  At any rate, we have the gridiron Heels three wins from playing in the ACC title game and the Tar Heel basketball team opening up the season as a unanimous #1 as a favorite to win the national title.  And through the wonder of the ABC’s scheduling we get them on at the same time.  Good times to be sure.

Comments if you have them.

We need to step it up on defense, in both games.sooner rather than later.

Is this thing on? :-) J/K

  • Apparently no basketball game in MD. Football team is missing too many chances to get some breathing room. I am beginning to wonder if maybe he should put Yates in to shake things up.

    Well that stinks!

kind of annoying for us Heels fans in SoCal today that a NON SELLOUT meant a blackout and no game! Good thing we get our only in person deal in Santa Barbara next week (barring the fire situation, of course).

Casey is obviously no Connor. I think Yates should have at least been given some snaps in the second half to see what would happen. The best throw of the day came from a full back. VERY disappointing.

That being said, the bball team looked pretty good. I really like the play of the freshmen. And Frasor on a bad stick is still one of the better defenders and leaders on the team. A good outing that should only get better as the team gets healthier. I like Zeller’s footwork, and Drew is FAST. Davis with a double double in his first game in college is pretty damn promising.

Cam Sexton’s run has been good, but it needs to be officially over. We got lucky we have a decent back up that filled in when needed, but the past couple of games Sexton has shown he is just that, a back up. He has a good play here and a good play there, but I credit that to outstanding receivers. T.J. Yates must start against N.C. State.

On another note, the freshman looked good against Penn. I think we will be able to maintain without Hansbrough for a little while.

Looking over the post-game b-ball statistics, I am most impressed with Ed Davis. Tyler (2.0) Zeller will get the love for his 18 points, but Davis had a better overall game. 14 boards are HUGE, regardless who the opponent is. Having said that, I was definately happy to see that Zeller’s offensive production is there.

    As for the football team…

    why?

I was pretty disappointed in both teams. The Heels looked pretty lax in the Dean Dome today, and if we’d have played a good team we would have probably lost. Lawson didn’t take advantage of his speed and penetrate more often, and we settled for entirely too many 3′s. The fact that Penn thought they had a chance to come back with ~3 minutes left says everything.

We saw the last quarter of the football game in the Dome, and I must say that was weird. I just wish we’d have tried to kick a long FG after that turnover. I’m not sure why we punted, it just seemed a little conservative. Plus, you can believe that would have been a sign to Casey that Davis hadn’t given up on him. Conservative play has been a problem in our 3 losses this year.

Pack fans will be unbearable this week. Here’s hoping that we can shut them up next weekend with a lopsided victory.

  • ^No they won’t. Last I check we were still 7-3 in football and them, not so much. Also, their basketball team lost their opener to New Orleans.

I stand corrected. ESPN’s scoreboard shows NO won the game but apparently NC State did.

  • I can say I thought Zeller & Ed played well. Drew was real fast, but I don’t know about his ability to finish just yet. I think Zeller will be great in the open floor running with the boys on the break. Ed Davis, like I said in posts 6 months ago, looks like a carbon copy of Hansbrough. He goes after those offensive rebounds & second chance points. He is strong and goes up hard. Attacks the glass like he’s going to be executed if he’s not successful. I thought our continuity stunk though. We didn’t have much team chemistry. Looking forward to seeing Hansbrough back. He is still the big man on campus, I don’t care who comes in.
