During the past ten years Tar Heel fans went into full abandonment mode concerning the football team once basketball got rolling. Except for 2002, that was a horrible stretch for both programs. That has all changed this season and we are left with both teams playing on the same day making our Saturday very busy and if you think this week is something wait until next Saturday when basketball and football are both playing televised games at the same time. Get your sports bar picked out now for that one.
Open thread for the afternoon of UNC football(noon) and basketball(5:30). Comments if you’ve got ‘em.

I never gave up watching (or listening) to either, even when things were rough. The best part so far about this season has been finding this blog. Lots of good information and an abundance of nice folks.
Call me crazy but I think the Raycom guys like the GT QB.
I’ve been listening to a guy on the radio that I believe likes Carolina.
Touchdown in front of the Tar Pit!!!
Ditto!
I have enjoyed reading Tar Heel Fan for most of this year and finally registered. This is the first site I visit whenever my thoughts turn to Tar Heel sports! The articles are always worth reading and the comments are better than other boards too.
Very much looking forward to next Saturday!
Go Heels!!
Great win. I am so dissapointed I am not going to be able to go to the exhibition. This win makes up for it though. The fears I had prior to the game about GT and all of their offensive pitch outs for short to medium gains, became almost laughable as the UNC defense made that option look silly. Great play by both defense & offense. Good win!
I know it may sound silly, but I really hated seeing TJ go into the game. As much as I like Yates, this has been Cam’s team to this point, and I don’t want him losing any confidence or feeling like he is not our go to guy. He has played great knowing that TJ was not available to play. Now that he is, I wonder if Cam is always going to be looking over his shoulder, or play timid knowing that every mistake might mean he is on the bench. Those things can cause you to lose your groove. I say Yates should not come into any game unless it is evident that Cam is not going to get the job done. He should have been rewarded by finishing this game, knowing that he has sealed the deal as the starter & finisher of UNC offense.
JB:
I think Yates needs some game-speed work. There doesn’t appear to be any tension between Sexton and Yates, so I don’t think that’s a problem. You’re right that Cam has done a wonderful job, but the only way you get Yates back to full-strength is to steal a series or two when you can.
Besides, I think Butch knew what he was doing with Yates. If you saw the game on TV, you saw TJ warming up when we were up 21-0. GT scores, and Cam comes back out. We score to go up 28-7, and Yates gets his shot. Up 3 scores with less than 3 mins left is pretty much when you might see a backup QB anyway.
I think it’s pretty clear that Cam is the guy, but we are only better with a backup who is ready to go – just ask VT.
Yeah, I can’t really argue with that point. I just don’t want to see Cam lose his confidence. To ne, he has earned this job for his Senior year. But in all actuality, Yates does need to get some time in, if he is expected to come in and play. Hopefully, we will finish out the side & not need him to play.
I’m not sure if Cam has earned the job outright. There will be a competition again in the spring, and at the end of the day, Yates is a much better passer with far greater downfield range. The deep bomb is almost out of our offensive package now because Cam can’t throw it.
You could see the rust on TJ after being out 7 weeks, but you could also see his touch. The last pass he threw to the end zone had the perfect touch, but the timing was off, as you would expect after being out for so long. Cam can’t throw like that – even his wide-open play-fake bomb to Nicks was underthrown.
Please don’t construe this as a knock on Cam – he will long have a place in Tar Heel hearts for the job he has done this season. But I’m not sure anyone is ready to hand him the keys to a potential 2009 preseason top-10 team in November knowing Yates will be back at full-speed…
there is a song from my youth, don’t know who it’s by but it went something like this…
Their playing Bas-ket-ball their playing bas-ket-ballll.
Daily Doc. This is Cam’s junior season. That is why I was just stating that maybe he should finish out the season, barring no bluders, of course. It will definately be Yates team next season.
Keith,
That would be Kurtis Blow.
I know. That was our era’s hardcore gangsta rap. Kurtis Blow, Sugar Hill Gang, the Fat Boys, Run DMC. They sound like my church choir compared to todays gangsta rap stars. I enjoyed some of Kurtis Blow & Run DMC’s stuff when it first hit the scene in the early 80′s. But I have a big distaste for rap music. Growing up, I liked the post-disco pre-rap stuff. Kool & The Gang, Earth Wind & Fire, New Edition, The Gap Band, Rick James, Cameo were among my favorite. When rap hit the scene, it really put a damper on their music because all of the radio stations converted over to that type of music, thus rendering these groups obsolete.
