If you are not busy at 7 PM Thursday night and are close to Chapel Hill, there are tickets still available(though it looks like that may not last long) to see something that has not happened in 30 years. Tyler Hansbrough is all but certain to score at least nine points versus Evansville Thursday night and pass Phil Ford atop the North Carolina all time scoring list. According to ACC Now, Ford, who is also an assistant with the Charlotte Bobcats has a free night so he will be on hand to see Hansbrough ascend to the top of the scoring list.
The game will be televised on ESPN.

Not only has it been 30 years, but you would be hard pressed to convince me that it will be broken while Roy Williams is the coach. Given the way Roy stockpiles talent, we are unlikely to see another freshman come in and immediately start scoring 18-20 a game, and any that do, will be VERY unlikely to stay long enough to mount a run. Tyler is a combination of as special player, in a special situation…
I’m not trying to rub it in (I would never do that
), but I’ll be there. I can’t wait! Go Heels!
If he keeps up his pace, I will be there when he breaks JJ’s ACC record in the ACCT. I get chills just thinking about that possibility!
C Michael – Perhaps THF can help me out here, but I believe he’s still on pace to do that against Duke at the Smith Center on Senior Night. That would be bonechillin’ cool!
It all depends on how much he averages per game this season here are the games he could break it in based on averages. He needs 488 more points.
vs Duke 23.3 ppg
ACC Quarterfinals 22.1
ACC Seminfinals 21.2
ACC Finals 20.3
NCAAT 1st Round 19.5
NACCT 2nd Round 18.7
The even money is on him averaging in the 20-22 ppg range which puts him in the ACC Tournament doing it. He is averaging 22.8 right now which is right on the line between the Duke game and the ACCT.
As cool as it would be for him to do it against Duke, part of me wants him to do it on any other game. This has been a great and successful class, and senior day should, IMO, be about the lot of them, not just Tyler. I’m glad to see that they will not be retiring his # until next year.
I’m not sure his record will ever be broken, unless something changes in the way the NBA draft works. I don’t see another guy as talented as Tyler starting (and staying) for 4 years without significant injury and putting up his numbers day after day. History in the making for sure, I just wish it was a weekend home game so I could see it in person…
FYI: The NCAA regional is in Greensboro this year and they’re still advertising ticket sales on the radio. Get yours now at Ticketmaster. The last time I went to the 1st and 2nd rounds in G-boro, UNC was sent away and I had to watch Duke. Not gonna happen this year.
The NCAA really messed up the ticket situation this year. It was a complete trainwreck and there was no way to order online. I would like prempt my gripping about two situations that occur every year during the tourney – 1. NCAA never has the scores of other games underway during a live game, the audience likes basketball and they just might want to know. 2. CBS = can’t broadcast shot clock. Thank you, that is all.
Go Heels!

Actually, those numbers are on the line. He needs to average at least 23.3 to break the record at Duke. If he averages any less, then he doesn’t do it at Duke.
I do believe I will cry when he breaks it. Unfortunatley I won’t be able to attend. I would love it if he broke it against Duke but it would be very dramatic if he broke it in the final round of the ACC tourney….on a buzzer beater……that won us the game.
Jack,
That’s not exactly true… if Tyler averages 22.8 for the next 20 games then he will go into the Duke game needing 31 to equal JJ’s record. So while unlikely, it would certainly still be possible.
I think it all depends on how much he plays and how well. For all we know he could score 40 at dook but only 15 all his other games. I really don’t care when he breaks it. I only care that he does it.
[...] and The Price Is Right has no problems getting an audience. Apparently, tickets are still available for the historic night in Chapel Hill. addthis_url = ‘http%3A%2F%2Fwww.850thebuzz.com%2Fblog%2F%3Fp%3D6760′; addthis_title = [...]
I asked roy at the open practice whether anything special will happen when tyler breaks the record. he said no
Not that I remember Phil playing but if any one does, how many more points would he have had if he wasn’t in the Four Corners?
Also I just went to the 850 web site and they have a banner for team affiliation with, yeah you guess it Dook. So anything said or talked concerning the Buzz is null and void as far as I’m concerned.
UNC averaged 81 ppg during the Ford years.
UNC has averaged 88 ppg during the Hansbrough years which includes the ridiculous 97 ppg so far this season. If that settles down to around 90 ppg like I think it will UNC teams will end up averaging around 85 ppg during Hansbrough’s tenure.
On that basis Hansbrough and Ford were roughly the same percentage of their respective team’s scoring during their college career.
So in short, Four Corners, did not necessarily inhibit UNC from scoring.
I think the 4 corners helped Ford as the ball was in his hands… a dangerous place for our opponents. I did see all the televised games Phil played, as well as a few in person, and two high school games too. I’m sure a tear or two will come from me and my crew’s eyes as we listen to Woody and see Phil walk on the court. He was, and still is, the man for us. Congrats to Tyler, as he has earned every record and all the praise that comes his way.
Thanks THF and Wilf
