Quite a thread! UNC basketball is a big tent with room for all. I mean, it is practically a religion for some of us and passion just takes over. I just think some of us think this team is more talented than others do. I feel like this team is deep (still), experienced, and good but that there are no NBA all stars on the team and also some pretty weak defensive players. I think that the defensive stats show that the players are working hard, but ultimately very good perimeter players can break down our man to man and get to an unprotected basket. We block shots and we don't foul, but the defensive rebounding (rank 123) has left much to be desired and we don't get turnovers as much as we should. Teams don't get that many looks from outside but the ones that they do get seem to be wide open. When you look at Kansas last season....they were only a little bit better than we were statistically...but they played much better defense. We got 0 bench points and Tywon had a nightmare. Last season this team won a ton of games, but many were very close as we won all three OT games and some real squeakers in conference. This season we've also been in some very close games and come out on both sides.

So why is everyone so sure we are SO super awesome rad talented? The NBA did not think so. This team is good, but I don't feel we can show up play well and always win. There were teams that could beat us last season and there are this season too. I'm not saying we won't win the title...but check this out the adjusted efficiency from 2005:

126.6 [1] 86.7 [5]
123.0 [2] 90.0 [21]

And that 2005 team was loaded with lottery talent and still had to scrape by three of the top six teams in the country (according to Pomeroy Nove-6, MSU-4, Ill-1).

Maybe we'll get a good draw and Lawson will take over games and Ellington and Green will be nailing from outside and Ed Davis will play more minutes and block a bunch of lay ups and Psycho T will save his best for last. It could happen. It might not though and the odds have always been that one of the other 343 teams would win instead of us. We are still the favorite, I guess, but not an overwhelming favorite, and I don't think we should be.

That's the one! I thought it was great. He wrote some other books that I can't remember the names of. Did you read any of those?

Well I had this whole, go to the library and check out every basketball/UNC book they had thing going on. May I also suggest March to Madness? It has some great NCAA stories in there. Not completley about UNC but still a good read.

THF: Great idea. Those would be alot more fun than those C&E courses I took online the summer after freshman year.

I should start some online courses for UNC basketball history. What william gave could pass as a reading list in a college class.

That is already pretty good. The last one is kind of optional but at least shows how complicated some of the stuff that Phog Allen, Clair Bee, Frank McGuire and Dean Smith came up with is. You probably won't want to read it all the way through but the concepts are good.

I am a baptized Catholic (and that means I can say whatever I want about BC, right?), but a Northern Catholic school four states away from Maryland does not belong in our conference.

I have no idea why they abandoned all of their Catholic school rivalries with G-town, Villanova and Notre Dame. Well, I do, $$$.

I say, let's bring in an original Southern Conference member with a great basketball and football tradition, WVU and trade the Big East back BC.

Here is my list of UNC books to read, basically in order of importance to me, with the first one by Dean Smith. I haven't put links because THF's site shuts you down if you try to put in multiple links but most of these can be found at the library and all of them on Amazon:

A Coach's Life

Going Home Again: Roy Williams, the North Carolina Tar Heels, and a Season to Remember

Blue Blood: Duke-Carolina: Inside the Most Storied Rivalry in College Hoops

Dean's Domain: The Inside Story of Dean Smith and His College Basketball Empire

More Than a Game: Why North Carolina Basketball Means So Much to So Many

To Hate Like This Is to Be Happy Forever: A Thoroughly Obsessive, Intermittently Uplifting, and Occasionally Unbiased Account of the Duke-North Carolina Basketball Rivalry

The Road to Blue Heaven: An Insider's Diary of North Carolina's 2007 Basketball Season

Basketball: Multiple Offense and Defense
