This is some pretty low hanging fruit for anyone wanting to discuss favorable officiating for Duke. I think if we culled the video archives of every college basketball game played we would find this sort of think happens more often than not. It should be noted this is the 2nd such video of a Duke player shuffling his feet this way.
Here is a question: Folks who are quick to defend the state of officiating focus on the game being much faster and the players being bigger which in turn makes it more difficult to call. If that is the case, shouldn’t we think about putting a fourth official on the floor?

Ha! Wow.
That second clip was used by Bob Knight on his ESPN clip about missed traveling calls.
I think 4 officials would definitely help, the only problem is, there are so many games, it is going to be hard to find more officials.
And then we will have instant replay and it will just get worse. NFL officiating is worse than it has ever been. I think things are fine as they are now. Does anyone think we would have had any different national titlists the last few years with an extra official? Maybe Memphis, where I think they got improperly deducted a point at the end of last year’s final. Maybe Duke in 2004? I think the officiating is far worse in football than in basketball, where it is actually pretty good.
One thing college could do is get rid of the charge rule under the baskets. That, like the ground/fumble rule in football, causes 80% of the disputes.
I actually just tossed that out there half in jest to those who claim the game is too “whatever” right now and the officials do the best they can. I think stuff like this is a prime example of the three officials paying more attention to something else than the player’s feet. I am betting they wanted to make sure an elbow did not come up too close to someone’s face or whatever the freaking point of emphasis is for this week
How many traveling violations did Hansbrough get the other night? Sick.
I know. It would also be nice to have videos from this year where we have been called for a foul on a steal attempt, and have a contrast with Duke in which no foul is called. I see no difference at all.
Wow I count nine in the first one and the second just made me laugh.
THF, you can bet your a– that the feet are all the refs are watching when Tyler has the ball. Four years of crying by other coaches has made it a “point of emphasis” for ACC officials. Sometimes he really does walk but you can be sure he practically never gets away with it. Those clips made me lol. You should have to buy a bus ticket to travel that far!
How many caught the referee giving a hand up to one of the dookies in the second half?
Any guage on how often that refs do something like this? I wouldn’t think it should ever happen, but perhaps that’s just an outward sign of their fealty to k-alphabet.
Thanks for the laugh!
Dj_joek, I saw the ref helping up the Duke player last night too, and thought basically the same thing – when was the last time I saw that? Uh, never, I guess, but maybe it stuck out to me because of my anti-Duke bias. I’m going to watch for it now in other games. I’m not holding my breath, though.
Last week’s SI has a quote from Roy about Coach K and the infamous Duke moving picks…interview with Dan Patrick. Asked who would win in hand-hand combat, Roy says he’d have to use guerilla tactics, since Mike went to Army.
Don’t forget to tune your sets to HBO tonight…9pm Eastern I think. Their sports documentaries are quite good (Brooklyn Dodgers, Ohio State – Michigan).
Thanks. Too late for Eastern, but I also have Pacific!
HBO’s documentary “Battle for Tobacco Road” was excellent. Wish it had been 2 hours long.
Don’t know how many of you had a chance to watch the HBO documentary, “The Battle for Tobacco Road: dook vs. Carolina”, but I would definitely recommend it…pretty good job on the part of the directors and writers.
Nice background on the start of Dean Smith and his building the program, great portion about Charlie Scott and integrating the area.
Hilarious quote by Jordan about dook producing good college players, but Carolina being the program that has and produces NBA players…don’t remember the exact wording, but the way he said it and the smirk on his face…classic!
Made me dislike Seth Davis more than I previously did as well…
“I’m gonna beat you like a dog”. Brad Daughtery to Bilas…classic
Great to see Woody Durham get good air time as well. The story about Heymann either kicking / punching McGuire in a certain spot, was classic I thought. Bad blood goes back a long, long way.
[...] saw this video I almost thought it was a joke of sort, but then I saw it on another Tar Heel blog, Tar Heel Fan, and I re-watched it, coming to the conclusion that there is a major problem here if something like [...]
