The refs stink, but this is on the players most of all. How many more times does Roy have to get ticked off at them? The bottom line is that they just are not that good defensively. Maryland’s offense has consisted of open three after open three today, with the occasional wide open man underneath for a layup.
Just let 25 seconds run off and then foul their best free throw shooter. Great play, Roy. The refs have nothing to do with this loss. We were ahead by 9 with very little time. The team and coach just gave up before it was over.
heeled soul: he can’t coach the ref, but he’s had these starters for 3 years. they should playing with more intelligence, even if he decides to make them play their way through a tough game. thats something he CAN coach. there are NO excuses for this kind of performance, and everybody, including Roy, is responsible.
Of course, this Maryland team won’t show up against Dook on wednesday.
no way. we have to get everyone’s best shot.
they’ll lie down for Dook.
I’ll say it again: if you can’t play defense by the end of February, it ain’t gonna happen. All the Heels had to do to win was stand 5 guys defending the arc. It really is that simple against a smaller and inferior team.
look, basically Lawson was the only offense in the second half, Hansbrough completely vanished, and not because of superior size/athletes; I have to wonder if we are being frank about his health….
Okay, I won’t blame Roy but don’t expect me to give him credit when they win either. Nice system for Roy. He gets all the credit and none of the blame. Who drew up that last play?
Offense? How do you expect offense when Frasor played the whole second half? And why? So Frasor could let Maryland drill all those three’s?
If there’s one positive thing I can say, it’s that in 2005 our Heels laid an egg in the ACC tourney and looked about as bad as our boys did today. Curses, 3:30 ABC game, curses!
There was a foul on that last play. Why wasn’t it called? What happend? What happend to the Heels we saw against State and Dook? Where are the Heels I know and love.
Oh and please no predictions of gloom and destruction. I dont want to hear it. We can still win it just not like this.
Props to Maryland, they played well.
Our guys need rest they should be okay if they can rest and get yelled at.
Please don’t blame Roy. He’s a great coach and even great coaches have bad games.
And to all of you who now say we aren’t going to win it all: SCREW YOU. One loss (IN OVERTIME) is not going to take away our championship.
To be fair, towards the end of reg with UNC up 6, Ty was absolutely mugged with no call. Call that a foul, UNC shoots free throws, goes up 8 with 85 seconds left, and likely wins.
nature of foul calls is to even out; if one team actually fouls, eg, three times as much, there are unlikely to be three times as many calls against them–hard to argue calls when you shoot 11 more fts than the other guys, but it should have been 25 more…
nick, I agree. I don’t complain about missed calls when they are down low, but in the open court like that, you can’t miss them. Guarantee that foul is called at the Dean Dome. Such is life on the road in the ACC.
We all know the refs stink. Screw that. The bottom line is that the Tar Heels are a below average to bad defensive team. That is just the fact of the matter and it is too late in the season to think it is going to change. Every team’s best shooter has a field day against us because it’s nothing but open 3′s all day long, with the occasional open man on the cut underneath.
The announcers can talk all they want about Carolina having the best 3-point percentage in the conference, but this team succeeds when Tyler Hansbrough get the ball down low. The refs are killing the Heels here, but the Heels are killing themselves as well because they are not making a concerted effort to get the ball down low.
If Ty Lawson didn’t play for this team would be completely lost, ten game winning streak or not.
well I wouldn’t go that far, but it probably is time for a players only meeting. They only have to be good enough on D to get stops to close out a game, which they couldn’t do today.
“The bottom line is that the Tar Heels are a below average to bad defensive team.”
False, absolutely false. UNC, while not an exceptional defensive team, they came into today’s game ranked #16 in the country (for comparison, defensive stalwart Pitt was ranked 31). They had a bad half, after a great defensive first half.
Matt, the problem here is the Heels have to ADJUST to the lack of calls mid-game, it’s a full circle. Why were the Heels taking bad shots? Because they have to work around the calls and get what they CAN.
I know defense is not a question, but carolina had more offense than the score shows this game.
I am REALLY curious to see what Roy says about the game.
We play the worst perimeter defense in the ACC, if not the nation! How many times do we have to get caught inside on the double-down and not recover to the shooter to figure out that we really stink at it? Against the shortest team in the ACC, no less! A couple of times we weren’t in the same zip code with the shooter. What was Thompson doing on Vasquez towards the end of the game? All in all our most poorly coached game of the year. Embarrassing.
I usually don’t complain about officiating, and believe that individual calls sort of even out, but the no-call against the guy who blocked Tyler and the charge against Danny were tough (read bad) calls. But we have to be honest … Maryland played incredibly hard and Vasquez had a career game. And now, maybe we’ll finally get serious about defense.
How will that change losing to a team that you have so little respect for, like Maryland? Just work out some frustration or something?
I remember under Doh that Maryland beat us one Saturday by about 40 points and how giddy they were and guess what, we played again on Thursday in the ACC tourney and we beat them in a fifty point reversal. That is how basketball is among top players.
Forgive my grammar errors. One of my contacts “exploded” out my eye. watching the game!..The losses always hurt more than the wins feel good.Sadly enough.
How come opposing guards seem to have career games against us on a regular basis??? 27 games into the season and we are STILL struggling with perimeter defense. No wonder Roy dropped the “F” bomb after the moou game! Doesn’t fare well in March.
The standard of Carolina basketball and the winning tradition that has been established makes the losses harder to swallow. There in lies the analogy of winning vs losing. We expect to win every time we take the floor, and we do more often than not.We are 66-6 over our last 72 games! You know losses are coming. They are human beings.Just hurt more when they do.I would think MOST Heel fans would concur.
Is there a coach on our side of the court?
this is just horrid, and weird. we need TEAM Carolina to step up right now.
william,
Roy may have decided to let the players figure this one out. He has done it before.
i’m too angry to watch OT.
you folks enjoy.
WE NEED HELP
could SOMEBODY else maybe give Ty a hand out there!?
and I thought we were getting better, sigh
Why isn’t Roy coaching today? I could’ve sworn he was supposed to travel with the team, but I guess I was wrong!
Don’t blame this on Roy. It’s the players who are having problems
I hate to say it but this is a good time to lose. I’ll take the W but it will give ol’Roy a good case of get in their A** prior to the tourny.
no no not Danny. What now?
THAT IS NOT A CHARGE!!!!!!!!!!!!
the open 3, quel surprise!
hey chicago,
last time i checked, roy isn’t allowed to coach the refs. they REALLY suck today.
The refs stink, but this is on the players most of all. How many more times does Roy have to get ticked off at them? The bottom line is that they just are not that good defensively. Maryland’s offense has consisted of open three after open three today, with the occasional wide open man underneath for a layup.
totally agree Matt
Carolina miracle time.
WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? FOUL!
Just let 25 seconds run off and then foul their best free throw shooter. Great play, Roy. The refs have nothing to do with this loss. We were ahead by 9 with very little time. The team and coach just gave up before it was over.
How long was MD backcourt? It seemed like quite a while…?
that’s not on roy, william. that’s squarely on the players. you can tell roy told them not to foul vasquez or hayes.
what happened to Dean Smith’s rule of extending the game by fouling?
heeled soul: he can’t coach the ref, but he’s had these starters for 3 years. they should playing with more intelligence, even if he decides to make them play their way through a tough game. thats something he CAN coach. there are NO excuses for this kind of performance, and everybody, including Roy, is responsible.
This is what waiting to foul got you? They foul and you only get two shots. Great execution!
So number 5 or 6 on Monday? Maybe 7? At least this wasn’t dook. We need to learn how to defend.
Please don’t blame Roy. These guys just didn’t play well. The break will do them good.
Well, you guys wanted a loss and you got one.
you asked where he was TODAY. now you mention he’s had these guys for 3 years. not the same thing.
WHO WANTED A LOSS?
can I open my eyes now?
Of course, this Maryland team won’t show up against Dook on wednesday.

Where was the foul on that last possession?! Damn my dad’s terps! Twice!
Gary Williams seat just cooled off a little…he should thank Karl Hess in the post-game.
I blame Roy for the lack of late-game preparation. An easy inbounds against a press should not be difficult to do
because the Terps played defense and we didn’t.
congratulations heeledsoul, you’ve learned to argue semantics.
“We get everyone best game” so so true
They didn’t handle the press well at all.
the most glaring stat in the box score (beyond the obvious 13 threes we let them hit):
5 assists.
For the TEAM.
other glaring stat:
This is the FOURTH time this year we’ve had an opposing guard get a career high against our “defense”, and I use that term loosely.
There was a foul on that last play. Why wasn’t it called? What happend? What happend to the Heels we saw against State and Dook? Where are the Heels I know and love.

The ghosts of Cole Field house liveth today.
UNCgirl…I do like ham. preferably with egg on a Bojangles biscuit

It must not have been a foul as I saw no blood was drawn. Apparently the standards are raised to call a foul late.
Joking…Lawson should check if his wallet was lifted. Horrible non-call
nick, I agree. I don’t complain about missed calls when they are down low, but in the open court like that, you can’t miss them. Guarantee that foul is called at the Dean Dome. Such is life on the road in the ACC.

If Ty Lawson didn’t play for this team would be completely lost, ten game winning streak or not.
both the FSU and Miami games could have ended the exact same way. Both were close nail-biters, only to see Lawson nail a big shot to win.
Douglas torched UNC, and McClinton torched UNC. Today it was Vazquez…who for some reason reminds me of a character on “King of the Hill”. not sure who

We got beat/out-scrapped by a bunch of scrubs!!! I almost feel sorry FOR GT next Sa.t at the Dean Dome!…Emphasis on almost!

I know. I hope the players feel as bad as we will for the next week.
“The losses always hurt more than the wins feel good.”
Really? Man, the day that ever happens for me is the day I stop watching sports.
How come opposing guards seem to have career games against us on a regular basis??? 27 games into the season and we are STILL struggling with perimeter defense. No wonder Roy dropped the “F” bomb after the moou game! Doesn’t fare well in March.
Ty is short, for one reason, and Wayne may not be particularly distinguished on the defensive end for a second reason.
The standard of Carolina basketball and the winning tradition that has been established makes the losses harder to swallow. There in lies the analogy of winning vs losing. We expect to win every time we take the floor, and we do more often than not.We are 66-6 over our last 72 games! We were luckier last year.
