It’s not my couch cushions you should be worried about. It’s whoever is around me at the time. Last year I made my sister cry. LETS GO HEELS! TURTLE SOUP TONIGHT! (hopefully)
Question: How does one “Fear the turtle.”? Turtles are not ones for inducing fear.
Tyler has been finominal. They are fouling. Good thing for us. The threes need to go down and they have been. D could be better but an improvement from last game. Ed Davis can block shots like no other. Tyler will get to the line, FINALLY!
Vasquez has scored all of Marylands points. I’m guessing we need to defend him better.
Vasquez is a butthead. He seems very full of himself. Well he can be he’s a great player but the whole chest thumping thing needs to go. Tyler is as good or better. Does he do that? No. Only when he make a huge play does he do that, like a game winner or an amazing dunk.
Zeller needs to set up closer to the basket or shoot from a face-up position instead of on the turnaround. I think he is shooting in some bad spots. I think he can hit shots like those but only after he is really back in the flow. Right now he needs to look for something a little easier.
Greetings all–long time lurker, first time poster. Happy to see Zeller on the floor. Couldn’t see him very well in the justin.tv feed last time (thank you DC raycom).
Jay Bilas was arguing on Gameday this morning that college basketball has become more physical than the NBA. After watching the refs swallow their whistle just now while TH was getting elbowed in the head, I think I might agree with him.
The problem is I would venture that half the NCAAT officials will be from the pool that does ACC/Big East games. That being said, I do not recall having a general problem with how the tournament was called last season.
Well, MD got whistled for six fouls in the first five mins then only committed three the rest of the way. Now perhaps they adjusted but I think Gary Williams ripping the refs may have paid some dividends.
Does Lavin have to have some theme to talk about during all of his games? Today it’s all Academy Award nonsense. I recall some other theme during the Nevada game on New Year’s Eve. Can’t he just talk about the game?
Yes. There are some guys who have themes they dwell on. Lavin is one. Jimmy Dykes does the same thing. It is like they are wholly incapable of working discussion off the game and the teams on the court so they bring the extraneous crap in.
the Jump Ball is the most idiotic rule in basketball…
it leads to most of the scrums and out of hand scraps in the game. At least 95% of the time, the proper call is a reach in foul that the refs don’t have the stones to call.
I wish once, ONCE, this team would show some killer instinct. Watching rebounds fall at our feet and failing to defend the three (surprise!) will result in a loss…
Where did Tyler go? He was fantastic in the first 5 or 10 minutes but then he just faded out. He’s taken some charges and stuff but its like he kinda went out.
I am blowing a fuse at this bunch of WIMPS wearing blue today.
ZERO killer instinct…let a mediocre team that you had on the ropes cut your lead by 9 points in less than 2 minutes for the pure and simple reason of EFFORT plays on defense and rebounding.
THIS is why we won’t win a title this year; no toughness, mentally or physically. I hope I’m wrong and fear I’m not.
Three straight three pointers by Md, 2 straight foolish fouls by UNC, Md is shoting 60&+ this half.
OK. CALM DOWN. WE ARE TOUGH. WE ARE NOT WEAK. WE CAN STILL WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP. WE WILL BE OKAY. WE HAVE HAVE TOUGHNESS, WE CAN STEP UP. TEAMS HAVE MADE RUNS BEFORE. WE CAN HANDLE IT.
The problem in this game is not the Heels defense. The shooting has been crap for the Heels. Three straight missed shots. MD is shooting 40% that is good enough defense. UNC is shooting 37% and the only guy who was playing well, Danny Green, is in foul trouble.
Ok. I really don’t want to hear all this “They can’t do this” and “We don’t have that” crap. Please. Right now is a time to HAVE FAITH IN YOUR TEAM, And SAY POSITIVE THINGS.
Remember, basketball is a game of runs. MD happens to be on one. We will have ours.
Who is this Tucker fellow for Md? I see that he’s hit 4-5 on threes.
Is it just me, or does it not frequently seem to happen that at least once every season or so, a previously unheard of player from an opponent comes in and hits us for a career high, usually on an inordinate number of threes?
It’s not my couch cushions you should be worried about. It’s whoever is around me at the time. Last year I made my sister cry. LETS GO HEELS! TURTLE SOUP TONIGHT! (hopefully)
Question: How does one “Fear the turtle.”? Turtles are not ones for inducing fear.
Steve Lavin. Good grief.
What’s up with the turtles in yellow today?
Beat the Terriblepins!
My odds says it won’t be close. Heels by better than their first meeting’s margin and a lower total score for the twerps.
I’ve seen the Terps go early-80s old school yellow a couple of times recently.
I like that they are going to Hansbrough early.
Tyler has been finominal. They are fouling. Good thing for us. The threes need to go down and they have been. D could be better but an improvement from last game. Ed Davis can block shots like no other. Tyler will get to the line, FINALLY!
“Turtles are not ones for inducing fear.”
Snapping turtles are… trust me…
Ow. Are MD turtles snappers?
Does anyone else notice how Davis turns to the left on his free throws?
Wow…Brent Musberger is obsessed with the MD foul situation. Of course six fouls in the first five mins does seem high.
There is only so long Vasquez can be the only offense.
So Musberger called Vazquez one hot Venezuelan. Interesting.
this is bizarre.
DFG has been caught flat footed a number of times on defense…as in, most of the time.
I think the only player I despise more than Vasquez is Paulus…
refs are doing their best to ‘equalise’ the foul situation. Karl Hess in the house.
Musberger’s Howard Cosell moment perhaps.
Somebody guard Vasquez. Let’s see more of those type moves, Deon!
He tripped over his own feet. How could they call a trip?
Four wins over Wake Forest by the bottom of the ACC which sorta takes the shine off it.
Good move by Deon there. Notice that he didn’t put the ball on the floor. He could do that every time.
This game has been so weird.
Deon = greatness
Tyler = amazingness
Tyler Z = tallness
Roys outfit = weirdness (a striped shirt with a paisley tie? what the heck?)
Does not say much about being poised to take #1 when you are not even favored on the road versus an unranked team.
Ty’s thinking he should have gone for the reverse on that layup I bet
Zeller needs to set up closer to the basket or shoot from a face-up position instead of on the turnaround. I think he is shooting in some bad spots. I think he can hit shots like those but only after he is really back in the flow. Right now he needs to look for something a little easier.
DJ,
Yes. He needs to protect the shot using the rim.
We’re shooting better than them. Our 38% compared to their 32%. Meh. Not so happy.
seven straight minutes of wasted opportunities…we play great defense and boneheaded offense…great.
ALL DAY LONG
To quote Musberger, that is one hot Venezuelan because he just got toasted by Lawson.
Is winning two games in a row now considered a winning streak? State did it, Miami did it, Virgina did it.
THF: Would you like butter or jam on your Venezuelan?
Deon has been playing well.
54 steals vs 48 turnovers which means Lawson is +6 in personal turnover margin.
Greetings all–long time lurker, first time poster. Happy to see Zeller on the floor. Couldn’t see him very well in the justin.tv feed last time (thank you DC raycom).
Who is this aggressive, tough-nosed power forward, and what has he done with Deon Thompson?
Nice job by Mary-land to commit 6 fouls on that last scrum around the basket. Way to finish, refs.
Okay, you cannot convince me that there was not some kind of foul there.
That is terrible officiating. Of course there is no foul on any of those putbacks.
Those last few possesions were crazy.
Jay Bilas was arguing on Gameday this morning that college basketball has become more physical than the NBA. After watching the refs swallow their whistle just now while TH was getting elbowed in the head, I think I might agree with him.
I saw Gameday. They had Coach K on and asked if the game was too rough. What a person to ask. He said yes. He would know, the rat.
To what extent is this the pattern of officiating outside of the ACC and Big East? Maybe the tournament will be more finesse-oriented.
MidAtl,
Welcome!
The problem is I would venture that half the NCAAT officials will be from the pool that does ACC/Big East games. That being said, I do not recall having a general problem with how the tournament was called last season.
This is getting out of hand. I have counted 7 blatant non-calls against Carolina in the 1st half, and 2 blatant non-calls against Maryland.
Anyone notice how when UNC goes out of state, they have major officiating problems? In NC, it seems like the calls have been very accurate.
ouch, Zeller got his shot blocked there at the end of the 1st half. need to get off the ground next time
Well, MD got whistled for six fouls in the first five mins then only committed three the rest of the way. Now perhaps they adjusted but I think Gary Williams ripping the refs may have paid some dividends.
Ahhhh! Great back and forth with Thompson/Green that resulted in a three but Thompson bowled someone over in the process.
Keep the fouls coming Terps, but only the ones the refs will call.
I thought Sam Perkins was the “Big Smooth”
Um, WHERE THE HECK WAS THAT FOUL?
Tyler is getting fouled alot, it’s just not getting called. Who’s officiating?
Sam Perkins was Big Smooth. Steve Lavin is clueless.
Does Lavin have to have some theme to talk about during all of his games? Today it’s all Academy Award nonsense. I recall some other theme during the Nevada game on New Year’s Eve. Can’t he just talk about the game?
6-10 player shooting a fade away layup? weak.
we’d be up 20 if we made layups in this game.
keep letting a team hang around after you’ve gotten their crowd out of the game on the road is dangerous…and this is a 330 ABC game.
I don’t really loathe these two like I do other commentators but they aren’t very intelligent.
Nice ‘JUMP BALL’ on hansbrough….
Matt,
Yes. There are some guys who have themes they dwell on. Lavin is one. Jimmy Dykes does the same thing. It is like they are wholly incapable of working discussion off the game and the teams on the court so they bring the extraneous crap in.
I don’t loathe Lavin but I do loathe having to listen to him.
Would be nice to see Wayne heat up about now. Wow, he just hit! Is Maryland getting tired? They’re certainly racking up the fouls.
the Jump Ball is the most idiotic rule in basketball…
it leads to most of the scrums and out of hand scraps in the game. At least 95% of the time, the proper call is a reach in foul that the refs don’t have the stones to call.

Jump balls are very stupid.
Where did Tyler go? He was fantastic in the first 5 or 10 minutes but then he just faded out. He’s taken some charges and stuff but its like he kinda went out.
Oh no, Danny has 4 fouls. This is bad.
They haven’t gone to Hansbrough enough. The Heels are getting sloppy all around right now and Maryland is right back in it. Danger time.
I am blowing a fuse at this bunch of WIMPS wearing blue today.
ZERO killer instinct…let a mediocre team that you had on the ropes cut your lead by 9 points in less than 2 minutes for the pure and simple reason of EFFORT plays on defense and rebounding.

Three straight three pointers by Md, 2 straight foolish fouls by UNC, Md is shoting 60&+ this half.
effort plays. period.
what is Lawson doing? He can drive by Vazquez every time he doesn’t need to mess around at the 3 point line.
OK. CALM DOWN. WE ARE TOUGH. WE ARE NOT WEAK. WE CAN STILL WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP. WE WILL BE OKAY. WE HAVE HAVE TOUGHNESS, WE CAN STEP UP. TEAMS HAVE MADE RUNS BEFORE. WE CAN HANDLE IT.
point and case.
TY LAWSON. ALL DAY LONG.
The biggest change in Lawson? He understands that he simply MUST take the game over, especially if the other team has rallied.
And he does. Examples? Dook, FSU and now Maryland.
he was pretty darn good late against Miami too
this is Lawson’s team now, not Hansbrough’s….
Can announcers quit talking about how the three point shot has changed college basketball? The three point shot has been in place now for 22 years!
frasor looking scared of the 3…
that’s exactly right, Matt…and for the entirety of those 22 years the Tar Heels have never defended the three point shot.
five straight made threes for Md…why do we NEVER defend the three?
playing the percentages? That never seems to work on the road.
edit:
six straight threes.
It is not hard to imagine a 3rd round NCAA tournament game being like this.
The problem in this game is not the Heels defense. The shooting has been crap for the Heels. Three straight missed shots. MD is shooting 40% that is good enough defense. UNC is shooting 37% and the only guy who was playing well, Danny Green, is in foul trouble.

Remember, basketball is a game of runs. MD happens to be on one. We will have ours.
It’s worked pretty darn well on the road the past two seasons.
MILLBOURNE IS OUT. THINGS ARE LOOKING UP!
Perfect example of Lawson being basically unguardable.
Ty Lawson can be the most dominant player in college basketball when he takes it to the opponent.
Who is this Tucker fellow for Md? I see that he’s hit 4-5 on threes.
Is it just me, or does it not frequently seem to happen that at least once every season or so, a previously unheard of player from an opponent comes in and hits us for a career high, usually on an inordinate number of threes?
Lakista McCuller, meet Mr Tucker.
Attn: Musberger. It has to hit the rim for the shot clock to reset.
I am not fond of Vasquez.
Vasquez is trash – enough said.
I do not like him on a train, i would not like him on a plane. I do not like him Sam I am…I do not like Vazquez or ham
certain, shall we say, “styles” of officiating basically take Hansbrough out of the game….
Brent Musberger has gotten really bad in terms of knowing which player did what. He has called the wrong player several times.
TXT: You don’t like ham?
Officiating? Yes. But look also at where he is getting the ball. Too far from the basket too often.
great pass Vasquez…how many rebounds does Bobby have?
it is amazing how easy a team can get an open 3, in a situation where they absolutely REQUIRE the 3, against us….
Bobby “Windex” Frasor?
Frasor has seven boards, three of them offensive. Most of them have been hustle plays to the ball.
defend the three.
it’s that simple.
that’s how we can win or not win every game from here on out.
that’s all there is to it, and our last two games, teams have shot a combined 60 percent on threes.
harbinger?
i hope not.
my thinking, positive or realistic (I prefer the latter) isn’t going to make us guard beyond the arc.
Bobby has 7 rebounds.
what is this, highway robbery?
how really how is that not a foul?
Tyler only got clotheslined there.
Unbelievable. How was that a charge?
No Brent…when you are trailing one possession with the shot clock still on you do not foul.
refs are bullcrap…this is horrible officiating
This game is flat out infuriating.
don’t blame the refs–disgraceful finish by our guys at both ends of the floor…..
Roy should have told them to rush it to halfcourt and call timeout. Lawson handled with not enough agressision.
Overtime. Oh no. Danny and Tyler both have four fouls and the officals are not calling the right thing. Dear Lord please help the Tar Heels.
This game is prone to officiating investigation. Quote me on this.
Someone needs to step in during the OT session and be assertive…the Twerps just aint this good
