Heels Looking For One More Trip To Omaha

UNC takes on East Carolina this weekend in the NCAA Super Regional in hopes of earning a fourth straight trip to the College World Series.  Game 1 is at noon on Saturday, followed by Game 2 Sunday at noon and Game 3(if necessary) on Monday at 1 PM.  ESPNU will broadcast Game 1 with the rest appearing on ESPN. Alex White will start Game 1 with Adam Warren getting the nod on Sunday.

Tar Heel Blue has all the information you will ever need and Jim Young at ACC Sports has a preview of UNC-ECU as well as Clemson-Arizona St.  The ACC has four teams in the Super Regional and would love to fill up half the bracket in Omaha.

Jon Manuel of Baseball America was on 850 the Buzz this week and said the window for a Tar Heel title in baseball may be closing for a season or two.  UNC stands to deal with some major attrition after this season, including Dustin Ackley who Manuel said might be the best player in UNC history.  The question for this team is whether the pitching can hold up.  If the offense shows up like it did last weekend, that question may not matter.

So, if the weather is nice I go boating, and if it rains down here hopefully clear skies in Chapel Hill will give me something to enjoy anyway.

Go Heels, beat those purple pierats.

THF, just a general note on UNC athletics. We’re currently ranked No. 2 in the Directors Cup behind perennial winner Stanford and ahead of No. 3 USC (the Left Coast variety). NC State comes in at 74th, the last ACC school. Duke is 9th and UVa 10th.
Looks like it’ll wind up being a 2nd place for UNC since we’re nearly 200 points behind Stanford and almost that many ahead of USC.
Any Baddour bashers out there? Might want to take out the wrath on the guy in west Raleigh.

    LarryP,

Believe me, doing poorly in the Director’s Cup standings (especially compared to other ACC schools) is nothing new for the West Raleigh crowd. It is business as usual in Wolfpack country. I’d jump off a bridge if I was a Wolfpacker, or perhaps shoot Lee Fowler.

Speaking as a life-long Pack fan, I would be happy with top-30 or so on average in the director’s cup. There are a lot of sports we don’t participate in, and we have never had across the board excellence, at least not since maybe the early-mid 70′s. When football and basketball have been decent at the same time, our director’s cup standings still weren’t top 10.

But really, if the revenue/marquee sports(football, basketball, wbb, baseball) are doing well, I don’t care so much about track, swimming and wrestling. Reading about how far down the list my team is in director’s cup standings is no surprise.

^^^^^or, the Heels could get offense AND pitching, and take advantage of poor ECU fielding. great start to the weekend.
