Florida International has decided to surrender in their battle against the 2K Sports Coaches vs Cancer Classic and humbly accept the complete whipping UNC is going to lay upon them in Chapel Hill on November 9th.
“We will honor our commitment to the tournament and the charity it will support,” FIU Athletics Director Pete Garcia said in a news release.
Don’t let the charity talk fool you. Robbi Pickeral points out this is about money and not money for cancer research. If FIU withdrew from the tournament, as they threatened to do, it would cost them three home games they are set to host following the opener. Losing home games in college athletics is akin to taking huge piles of cash and setting them ablaze like it was April 6th, 2009 on Franklin St. That would probably be coupled with some sort of nasty legal rebuke for breach of contract.
From UNC’s side, it really does not matter as illustrated by Steve Kirshcner’s response:
“We’re glad the matter is resolved and look forward to the start of the season.”
Translation: Meh…wake me up when we get to New York.
Of course for UNC fans still carrying around a vendetta over the loss to Indiana in the 1981 NCAA title game, this is a perfect setup. Current FIU coach and destroyer of the New York Knicks, CBA etc. Isiah Thomas lit the Heels up in the 2nd half of that game rallying the Hoosiers to the win. A severe beatdown might afford a small measure of revenge or at the very least make someone feel better.
If we can get the Tar Heel crowd to chant “REMEMBER AL WOOD!” at select points in the game that would be awesome.

A complete whipping is always fun, it’s even more fun when revenge is involved…
uncgirl50, don’t know if you’ve read about this or not. The UNC Basketball Museum just installed their Tyler Hansbrough exhibit about two weeks ago.
They couldn’t realistically pull out. They’d never get invited back to another one of these (and not get the cash), and at FIU heads would roll because that cash will probably finance the road trips for the entire athletic dept. all winter.
If FIU’s Thomas needs any pointers on taking a beating to get season travel money, he can call the fine folks at UNCA who get their beat-down every year from UNC.
Actually Michigan State has more experience being whipped by the Heels that most other teams at this point…yes I went there.

I like what you did there

And to another point…
“Actually Michigan State has more experience being whipped by the Heels that most other teams at this point…yes I went there.”
Ummm…I would add Coach Kay and his gang, y’know, considering the last time they beat the Heels in their own gym neither of my two children were born, W. Bush still had an approval rating over 50%, and Tyler Hansbrough and Danny Green were in high school.
basketball season can’t come soon enough, i’m more excited this season than i was last season b/c last season was very pressure packed with expectations. This will be an amazing year.
Jordan8027-
I fully agree, in that this season will come with tempered expectations; thus, if we don’t beat a team by 20, or we pull out a tough 64-63 game, we’ll all be please in getting the W.
I think that, as the season approaches, we’ll all start to really feel this “100 Years” aura throughout the season. I saw that Roy said he didn’t want the 100 years to be celebrated in one weekend; rather, he wants it to be a season-long celebration of a century of UNC basketball.
I can’t wait to see the images that are posted after the alumni game…should be something to behold.
Anyways, here’s to all of us, who ride the waves and weather the storms! And here’s to the University of North Carolina (at Chapel Hill)! From Mia Hamm to Lawrence Taylor, Jim Lampley to Julius Peppers, Charles Scott to Ed Davis…here’s to all of you as well!

Why I am I always the last to know about eveything?! Thanks for the tip PRGuy. I’ll check that out.
DeanForever- Hear, hear! This is going to be one fantastic season! And I know that we’re going to enjoy every minute of it!
well said!
