    fantastic stuff.

i was hoping to find t-shirts for the 100 years at the game, but nothing. seems like a lot of charity money was left on the table there.

  • uncgirl50

    Beautiful. I cried. Thanks THF.

That banner looks good hanging in our gym. I’m still perplexed by the whole 6 banners and only recognizing 5 Championships. I get that the first was voted on by writers and the last 5 were won out right. I mean go with one or the other, six banners hanging in the rafters with the words National Champions and then only recognizing five (trophy outlines) on the ring seems…odd.

^well, there was no NCAA tourney or NCAA basketball in 1924. i think the 1924 “title” as some say, was determined by a group, the Helms(no not that one) Athletic Foundation, that determined many pre-1939 champions.

the 1924 squad was 25-0 or 26-0, something like that, and they did beat Kentucky that year, so thats good enough for me!

Jack Cobb was on that team and was named National Player of the Year in 1926 by that same Helms Foundation, and since it was the only one giving out that honor in those days, Cobb’s jersey is in the rafters.

^good enough for me to say we have 6 Championships. The baseball hall of fame votes people in. Should we not recognize them because they were voted on by baseball writers? Maybe it is because of the letters of NCAA before the National Championships that count.

^i guess we just say we have 6 National Championships, and 5 NCAA Championships.

a shout out to the women’s soccer team.
they beat #2 Notre Dame 6-0.
    Six.
    Zip.

so thats 13-2 vs the #2 and #3 teams.

THF and I have long been at odds over the 1924 title recognition. I get all of the “the didn’t play so and so, they only played so many games, etc.” But, you know what? Those were the criteria for a championship team in that era, and the 1924 squad met those criteria. I think that the NCAA should officially recognize these teams (prior to 1939) as the official national champions. If the NCAA wishes, a panel can be put together to determine if the Helms choices were indeed accurate or if some warrant revision. You know what, if the Helms criteria was honored and pre-1939 champions were officially recognized, then Kentucky would have nine championships and Kansas would have five.

I’m just saying, the NCAA can be all-NFL about it (and focus on Super Bowl titles versus pre-SB titles) or they can go the MLB route (pre integration titles). Give credit where credit is due.

its hardly anything to get riled up about, really.
first of all, think about america in 1924. commercial air travel had barely or perhaps even not yet started. you werent going to play a national schedule. UNC’s 26 games is a surprisingly large number.
kansas was 16-3, ucla was 11-6, and kentucky was 13-3 and lost to UNC.
    Dook didnt even exist.
the NBA was 22 years from being started!

its not like we really brag to our buddies about 1924. i’m just happy i’ve seen 4 titles. thats pretty lucky.

The game was awesome. I took a few pics if anyone wants to see them. It’s on my Flickr page http://www.flickr.com/photos/27306833@N06/sets/72157622292563870/

Apparently Top of the Hill was the place to be after the game. Me and a few friends went there to get some drinks and continue the celebration. I walk up to the bar to order drinks and who walks up beside me? Hansbrough and Wes Miller. That would’ve been awesome by itself. But then we went out on the patio and got a table. Sitting 2 tables across from us was Michael Jordan and Buzz Peterson smoking cigars. And to top it off, as we were leaving, we run into Bobby Fraser and congratulate him on the game. BEST. WEEKEND. EVER.

Good pics, YJGH. And you are extremely lucky. The only way I would be more jealous was if you ran into Danny as well.

  • uncgirl50

I think I might just have to punch you YJGH. I am so jealous it’s not even funny. I went straight home after the game. I feel so stupid.

  • YouJustGotHeeled

Thanks TF11. I got tickets to the Coaches versus Cancer game at MSG so I’ll add some more then. Uncgirl50, you might need to punch me twice because I had dinner at the Firebird at Southpoint mall on Sunday and Hansbrough was there with his GF. Seriously crazy weekend.

  • uncgirl50

Dang, you’re like some kind of Tyler magnet! What’s your secret?

And I won’t full on punch you for seeing him with his girlfriend, (that’s just depressing) but I don’t know, I might slap you.

Seriously though, you are one lucky duck.

We went to the basketball museum Friday afternoon and ran into Carter and Jamison in the lobby. They were really cool, having fun with some kids and taking pictures. The game was great, and overwhelming as far as the players and coaches in the same building…. what a great time.

Also, the 2009 team was right in front of us in the end zone at the football game waiting for the halftime presentations. I was similarly impressed with how they treated the young fans asking for pics and autographs.

I don’t count titles from when they didn’t allow black players to compete.

College basketball really started in the mid-1950′s with USF and Bill Russell and KC Jones, and Wilt Chamberlain and Kansas, followed by the Cincy, Loyola and Texas Western squads, all of which featured black players. UCLA followed this integration trend and proceeded to dominate the sport.

Our 1957 team, which was all white, (although integrated in religous terms, with Catholics, Jews and Protestants, which was somewhat unusual in the South), at least had to play some integrated teams.

  • MidAtlanticBoy

Yes, the game was great. My friends and I went to the newly-revamped Players afterwards and were treated to a hip-hop performance by Quentin Thomas and friends. Got to shake hands and congratulate Danny Green, Ed Davis, and Mike Copeland. Highlight of my life.

Kinda jealous of YJGH with Hansbrough at Topo, though.

  • uncgirl50

MAB, a preformance by Q? No way! You know he’s on track for a record deal now, right? That’s like seeing a real celeb! And Ed, Danny and Cope too? I am so mad right now I could scream!
