UNC Moves Up In Both Polls

Only slightly. The win over ECU was impressive enough to garner some movement in the polls.  UNC moved up two spots to #22 in the AP poll and up one spot to #18 in the coaches poll. At some point the disparity between the two rankings will work itself out though I am still confused as to why there is one at all.

The bottom line for UNC is that against ECU they looked balanced on offense and continued to play shutdown defense.  The remaining question is whether the offense can continue at the level seen this past weekend or is it doomed to be as inconsistent as my three year old when deciding on breakfast.  This is where I drop the “only time will tell” cliche because…well…that is really all we say until we see something else.

Regardless of what did or didn’t happen with Spurrier, I’ve always thought the coaches poll is a better measure than the AP poll. There are certainly motivations for both groups that are less than helpful but in the end the AP poll is less reliable given that Dinnich gets a vote. I would think that most football coaches know more about the game, the teams and the players than say a writer. The media shapes our perception about everything including team rankings and that affects the coaches as well but I give a nod to the coaches poll. Also nice new header on the page, very clean and I like having Tate up there as well.

    Go Heels!

Just a note, unrelated to this post. I have only now watched the UConn game (I had it DVR’ed), and I saw the “celebration” where Pianalto hurt his foot. Everything I have heard and read up to this point had me thinking that he was jumping around like a fool (akin to what they do in the NFL) in order to celebrate. What a load of crap. He jumped one time, and only about 6 inches off of the ground. I’ve “celebrated” more than that after a good bowel movement for crying out loud. He could have hurt himself just as easily while walking back to the sidelines.
