#11 UNC vs Gardner-Webb Preview and Game Thread

Where: Dean Smith Center, Chapel Hill, NC
When: Monday, November 23rd, 7:30 PM
TV: Fox Sports South
Livestats: SCACC Hoops
Records: UNC 4-1, GW 3-0

So the Tar Heels make an effort to climb back on the proverbial horse and shake off the 2nd half meltdown versus Syracuse. Roy Williams’ coached teams do a fairly decent job on the rebound from losses and I expect no less here. My take on Roy after the loss to Syracuse was not one of anger but rather a quiet acknowledgment there is work to be done.  No mystery there.

Gardner-Webb probably should be taken with a bit of caution considering this team did score a win over Kentucky at one point and almost beat UNC in the 2006 season opener. That being said, the Heels are still the more talented team the problem is who knows what might happen if turnovers continue to plague UNC and Gardner-Webb lights it up from outside.  One advantage UNC does have in this game is size which is a broken record I realize.  In this case Auryn MacMillan is the only regular player the Bulldogs have that is 6-8 or taller. GW does have one 6-11 player but he averages 2 mpg. The rest of the roster comprises mostly guard sized players with a few 6-6 guys in the mix.  UNC should have no trouble rebounding the basketball or imposing their will on the interior.

In short, I expect the Heels to win and heck it might come a little easily if the Heels take care of the basketball and exploit the interior matchups.

UNC 85 GW 62

Update: Consider this your game thread for the game this evening so comment away. GO HEELS!!!

We’ll see if anyone brings the fire after the loss. Looking forward to it. Go Heels.

  • DfromFlorida

The never ending question- does anyone know if this game is being broadcast on the web? Our FoxSS channel is showing hockey tonight!

  • Looking forward to this game. I hope that we see some signs of dribble penetration in this game. Strickland & Henson, play with confidence, you have the abilities.

  • keithunc

DfromF, Looks like Justintv is playing the game.

  • uncgirl50

Hey guys! Sorry for my absence lately, my laptop was being stupid. I know you missed me, but here I am again!

Hopefully the guys can get a good win tonight and get some confidence back. I will be avalible for play-by-play if you need me. PLease don’t need me…

  • hooiser2tarheel

I am not superstitious but was not wearing my “lucky” Carolina shirt the other night, you can bet that I have it on tonight. GO HEELS!

  • keith, can we get linkage for justinTV? pretty please with a plastic Ramses kicking a crying dookie in the jibblets?

  • Heel To The End

    Mike Wood. ugh.

  • nvr mind, i actually found it!! usually cant find anything on there.

  • uncgirl50

Good a link, that means I’m off the hook.

Our rebounding is not what I would like.

  • Heel To The End

hope LD2 knows he’s going to get called for a charge 9 times out of 10 on that earlier blocking call.

whats with every team at any level now, having a guy that makes ridiculous 3s? do we have a guy like that, or just everyone else? altho, Roy would have a fit at taking that shot.

  • uncgirl50

We still can’t defend the three! But I’m very impressed with Deon so far.

  • Marcus

Ed’s not really big now, but he looked positively Hensonesque, in that footage from last year.

  • uncgirl50

HTTE: Sometimes Graves can be filed under that category, but only sometimes.

  • Marcus

Pump fakes against this group is not a good way to keep your shot safe.

  • uncgirl50

How is it that we have four or five guys under the basket, but they still get the rebound multiple times?

  • Heel To The End

i dont think any team in America has more 27 footers made against it. not saying they should be defending those, just noting the phenomenon.

  • uncgirl…look at that toothpick screen!

  • Heel To The End

you probably shouldnt just run away from the guy dribbling. the guy who made the 27 footer.

  • Heel To The End

i might as well say it yet again.

    One guy.

  • RoyDean

I continue to be embarrased about our lack of crowd in the lower level. The people who are too lazy to show up for a non-ACC contest should at least give the tickets away.

  • Marcus

    Press = Bad

  • uncgirl50

That guy with the long hair really needs a haircut…

  • Marcus

That layup was the first time Strickland has looked natural this year.

  • Marcus

    Tyler’s 240?

  • Heel To The End

    Free, LD. Free.

  • william

    What is the score?

  • Heel To The End

    40-25.
i love when the director feels the need to get all creative with the angle. just show the game properly.

  • william

I can’t get the Justin thing to work. All I see is fan chatter.

  • Heel To The End

hm. sometimes i have to refresh it when i first link to it, but i’m sure you thought of that already.
the fan chatter is like a room full of 11 year olds. who are those people?

  • Heel To The End

    One…guy.

    great play, John.

  • Marcus

Did Terrence Ogelsvy transfer to GW?

  • Heel To The End

i mean, its just too comical! ONE GUY has 40-50% of the opposition’s points how often in the last couple years?

  • Aside from the fact that Flinter is doing his best “Harold Arcineaux” impersonation, that was a very strong half for the Heels.

  • Heel To The End

BC lost to Northern Iowa?? clearly, they are struggling more than any ACC team with the loss of a great pg. wow.

i wonder A) how a team like South Dakota St gets invited to a tourney in the Virgin Islands, and B) how they afford it.

  • BC just lost Rakim Sanders to an injury, too.

    N. Iowa is a fairly decent mid-major.

  • Marcus

Graves does not make a lot of smart plays.

  • Heel To The End

    just some awful looking shots.

  • TexasFan11

    Isn’t Will a redshirt junior?

  • Marcus

Yes, he is Texasfan. That’s a largely why it’s so frustrating. His game doesn’t seem any better than it was when he was a freshman.

  • william

Okay, I tried it in IE instead of Sea Monkey and now it works. I hate when things are browser specific. Boy, lousy resolution but I guess beggars can’t be choosers.

  • TexasFan11

#42 looks like a young Severus Snape from Harry Potter. Sheesh.

  • Heel To The End

    i have it on Firefox.
i still say the whole site is made up of cameras pointed at tv sets.

that cinches it. Flittner hadnt had double figures yet this year, and he has 20 in the 1st half. there’s definitely some sort of voodoo goin on.

  • TexasFan11

I agree with you Marcus, he hasn’t grown as a player in the last 2 years. But I was asking cause the commentator called him senior.

Btw, Cowboys Stadium, I’m gonna be there!!!

Now, they can play that Gatorade commercial all they want. Matter of fact, let’s play that in place of the Kobe commercial.

  • “i still say the whole site is made up of cameras pointed at tv sets.”

It’s not. At my office the way we watch the ACC/NCAA Tournaments is we have this box on our network with an HD antenna on it. The laptop is connected to the projector and the video plays on the laptop through the network. Same concept here. These guys have a slingbox or something and they are streaming it out. When UNC played Duke in football I watched it on Justin.tv and watched the guy flip through the different channels on his digital cable during a commercial.

  • Heel To The End

^i wasnt serious. but i really dont see how the various organizations allow it.

  • william

Boy, if you put it on full screen it looks worse than clips from the 1957 title game….

  • william

So why is the bandwidth so horrible….?

  • TexasFan11

    Yay, Marcus!

Nice pass and way to run the court.

  • Marcus

    That was nicely done.

  • william

good pass for a layup by a ghostly player for UNC

  • Marcus

    Thank you, TexasFan. Thank you.

  • TexasFan11

    Wrong Marcus. :D Lolz.

  • william

And Al McGuire, who played for Frank at St. Johns, coached Belmont Abbey….

  • william

    Bonk and then a three….

  • william

    Deon looking good there….

  • Marcus

Nice play by, Ed, Twin, and the rim.

  • william

Put one of those guys underneath and the other out front and you would have Under Wear and Outer Wear….

  • Marcus

Strickland appears to be getting better at the 1.

  • TexasFan11

That was kind of corny william, though I can’t say anything. I do it too.

  • Marcus

    at william: GRROOOAAANNN…

  • Heel To The End

Flittner has more points than in his first 3 games of the year combined.

  • Strickland is looking more comfortable running the break. I missed most of the first half but what I did see was good stuff from John Henson yet he is not in the game now.

  • william

I guess if they show all the original commercials it is hard to see why SportsSouth would object to this re-broadcast, given the low resolution, it might be revenue positive in a sense for FSS.

  • william

Yeah, get it, Under Wear and Outer Wear, lol….

  • Marcus

Strickland looks 100% more comfortable this game than he has previously.

  • I know people have talked about John Henson’s weight endlessly but seriously, the boy needs to hit Bojangles three times a day or something.

  • TexasFan11

    We got it.

Speaking of the first half, how was it? I missed it ’cause it took awhile to get home from practice cause I couldn’t drive myself home.

  • I think UNC found the instructions to the fast break. Ty Lawson must have hid it from them when he left.

  • william

I do like Bojangles but we only have Popeyes up here. It is not very healthy, though.

  • Marcus

Henson needs to be for Krispy Kreme what Jared is for Subway.

  • Heel To The End

    ^@william:
name anything, any content, that is broadcast online (video) with or without commercial content simultaneously with its normal broadcast.
you can’t watch SNL online the same time its on, despite it being low rated and on at 11:30, for example.

  • Marcus

We look like we’re trying break the rim from the free throw line. Those are some mighty powerful bricks.

  • Heel To The End

    awkward!

  • DeanForever

Firing away from the three-point line is an ill-fated strategy…except for any underdog team against the North Carolina Tar Heels. Garbage. And no threes for us, and a crap effort from the FT line…we need a Danny Freaking Green spark. Where is this John Henson fella that everyone seems to be talking about? Is he on campus?

  • Marcus

^He’s there. He turned sideways. You can’t see him.

  • william

I know that but it is hard to imagine that it would be difficult to shut down this site if the media companies wanted to. I think SNL may be funny even in terrible resolution and also its novelty disappears quickly, maybe that is the difference. You would have to be a total pauper to opt for this crummy picture versus satellite or cable if you can get it.

We, of course, have the Capitals and Bullets and the Tar Heels are regularly pre-empted for their coverage, as well as post-game Redskins and Ravens coverage. Some years I buy the sports package but things started so early this year, I just didn’t feel the need the way I did other years where I pretty much saw every single game, like last year and 2005, except for Santa Clara which I believe was not televised.

  • Heel To The End

    10 missed FREE throws.

  • william

Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain and Shaquille O’Neal were all terrible free throw shooters.

  • DeanForever

William, I got hear late and didn’t read many of the previous posts…what the crap are you talking about?

  • Heel To The End

well, thats kind of my point, william. media companies ALWAYS want to shut off people seeing their content in any way they dont pay for. you can’t watch stuff on your 2 ” phone if you dont pay for it. thats why i’m shocked this justin site is still going.

    42 of GW’s 65 pts are from 3.
another trend over the years. always several games a year a team scores more from 3 than 2.

  • william

Which post? Wow, those are some noisy clanging rims.

  • DeanForever

Ugh…long day and now this potential barn-burner with Good Homes and Gardner Webb? LET’S…GO…HEELS!!!!!!!

  • william

Yeah, but remember the economic concept of monopolistic discrimination, which is akin to coupons, student rates and things like that. Revenue goes up slightly because people see the ads who would not have seen them otherwise.

I actually am not convinced that downloading hurts sales at all of music. I think what happened is that people re-bought their lp catalogs and then when they had done that, sales dropped off.

  • DeanForever

Williams, sorry…I’m cranky. You’re always good for some spot-on analysis and I lazily cast my eyes upon your post about tv reception or something of that nature. Are you concerned about Henson’s lack of invovlment in much of what transpires on the court? He seems to have a knack for converting open-court dunks, but little else. Is this the 2009-2010 version of the “Roy is hiding a five-star recruit in order to keep him one more year syndrome?”

  • william

It is a related concept but the tend to overcharge those that want things the most relative to others. One big problem is how easily DVD’s can be downloaded to cellphones and PSP’s,which prevents them from charging twice for the same content.

  • william

Honestly, my picture here is so bad that I am loathe to say anything except they need to defend the three and shoot free throws better. We were talking about the resolution of the picture because I was having trouble getting the site up on Sea Monkey, but not on IE. Strangely enough, I can’t turn off the inane chatter scroll on IE but I could on Sea Monkey.

  • DeanForever

Grayson Flittner is the new Tyree Rice.

  • william

If I were coach, I would have my team practice free throw shooting a lot.

  • Heel To The End

we all know GW beat Ky a couple years ago.
last year they opened with a 3 pt loss to VT and just a 4 pt loss to Okla.

  • william

My perception is however, in spite of Gardner-Webb being 3-0, well, meh….

  • william

I guess it is better than 83-80 on a last second shot….

  • DeanForever

If I were coach, I would have my team practice free throw shooting a lot:

    1. Two full-court sprints for every free throw made.
    2. Two successive trips (timed for speed) up and down the Smith Center steps for every free throw missed…this would be a five-hour practice.

  • william

I thought Leslie McDonald would be playing more….

  • TexasFan11

    Oh, that’s just cruel, DF.

Wear that #14 jersey well. Or I’ll never forgive you. : D

  • Interesting that the last UNC team to not make a three in a game had Vince Carter and Shammond Williams.

  • Heel To The End

must mean McD’s D is not up to snuff.

  • william

I think I miss Danny Green most of all the recently departed guys.
