I can't think of anything else to say, but undisciplined play cost us the game along with poor defensive playcalling in the final quarter. Rush 4, drop 7, let the QB find the soft spot in the zone. Happens everytime UNC is locked in a close game, and yet the defensive coaching staff and Butch himself don't seem to notice.
Talk has gone around about Butch "owning" the state in recruiting, but getting beat by State on a consistent basis can't help at all, and humiliating losses to teams you should bury won't attract the national recruits either.
I can't remember the last time UNC had back to back bowl seasons, and I'll cheer like hell for them as I always do, but a season that should be ending 10-2 with 8-4 and a lower tier bowl can't sit very well with donors and boosters.

BBLB --

I don't think the sky is falling. I think the season was disappointing, certainly compared to what it should and would have been had we not lost to three inferior teams. I also think we did not live up to our ability.

There's no doubt that the "bowl system is what it is," and I didn't expect my suggestion to be popular, much less accepted. But I still think it would be the right thing to do. For a minor bowl of the kind we'll be headed to, the exposure will be limited. And there won't be much to be gained by the extra practice; next season is nine months away. On the other hand, the kind of players we want to attract would notice a statement to the effect that, "We expect more of ourselves, and we'll defer congratulations until we produce it."

When we go to a bowl anyway, I'll watch it and root as usual. But that's only because I'm a Carolina addict. I can't honestly say addiction is, in general, a good thing.

Sure, it was a horrible, disappointing loss -- one which won't be erased anytime soon in my book, but no way on earth would I give up a chance to play in the post season.

We'll go to Charlotte or Nashville and we might even win. State can watch our game on TV no doubt rooting against us.

Fantastic, the sky is falling, we lost to state. Would you rather have their record and the win? This is now, the bowl system is what it is and to leave the additional practice, recruiting and exposure behind doesn't do us any good. Leaving the bowl behind would just make it that much harder for us over the next few years. It was at CF today and got to experience the pain up close and personal, stunning. We just failed on a few big plays then let NCSU run the ball and run the time out. They did their best with the pass play at the end of the game to leave time on the clock but at the end of the day the defense couldn't make the stops, put us under the bus with too many penalties and the offense helped out with a fumble. We just got beat.

Look on the bright side: At least we won't have the indignity, not to mention the surreal feeling, of Dook's going to a bowl.

Of course we shouldn't be going either, and I think it would make a welcome and refreshing statement if the players voted to decline any bowl invitation they got. The truth of it is that we're not very good. We are certainly well short of deserving what used to be the honor of post-season play. The players would do well to signal that they are disappointed in their performance this season, and expect better of themselves, by not going to a bowl.

I know this isn't going to happen, because that's not the way the world works (bowls = $$$ and TV, recruiting and scouting exposure). But it would send a message of high standards and self-respect that would get noticed. In a season that will be remembered mostly as a disappointment (three losses to nothing teams and a high school-level offense), it would be the one hold-your-head-high moment people would remember. And it would mark Carolina as different in a way that would make some of us, anyway, proud.

Its official, the UNC football program, or at least this version of it, can't handle sucess. They were beating state like the red headed step children that they are, and then went stupid, for lack of a better way to put it. They are clearly the better team, and in my opinion the better shape program, but they get to a certain point of sucess and lose their minds...now we have to listen to annoying ass state fan for another year.

While I'm not a fan of the navy, the uniforms had nothing to do with the loss. The team just stunk.

This was a HUGE loss for the program -- and Butch Davis -- no matter how you look at it... and I'm not even saying it was Butch's fault per se, just that many will hold it against him.

@wpe022 - totally agree. When Butch Davis starts winning rivalry games then he can tinker with the school colors. Until then lets stick with the colors that John Bunting wore when he beat State four times in a row and that Mac Brown wore when he made UNC a perennial top 25 team.

I'm a b-ball fan, so maybe I missed something profound, but why kick the second field goal on 4th down when it just puts you up by 6? You haven't gained any ground if the score doesn't change by a touchdown. If you score a touchdown, you're in much better shape. If you go for it and don't make it, your situation doesn't change. Going for a touchdown seems like a no-brainer in that situation.

Speaking of no-brainers, what's with all the penalties? A guard gets an out-of-bounds late hit penalty? Never heard of that. Aren't those usually on defense players making hits on ball carriers?

I'd stick to b-ball, except this was the only game I could get on the radio :)

We should never wear navy again
3:16 left, third and eleven, we rush 4 and play zone
Penalties: Pelc, Pianalto(2), and secondary
Game should have been over at half
