UNC looks to cap off a tremendous weekend for the Tar Heels as a whole. Harrison Barnes’ commitment, UNC beats Miami in football and now a chance to move to 3-0 in basketball before heading to New York for games against a pair of ranked teams.
The game is on Fox Sports South. If someone finds an online stream for the game, feel free to drop it in the comments.
Fire away. Go Heels.

I’m gonna say this about the gametracker. I like the reflection of our six title banners on the floor.
Page 2!
The boys are getting it going now. I have a feeling that Roy had some “spirited” words for them at the half.
Deon makes a shot, great offensive rounding.
Deon: 10 pts 7 rebounds
48-34
Valpo layup
Deon layup (8 in 2nd half)
Valpo for three
Foul on Valpo
Davis shoots FTs. First: Good. Second: Good
Davis for 11
52-39
Larry for layup.
54-39
Valpo timeout.
Drew2 and Deon have come out on really strong to start the second half.
ha! i had to go look at the banner thing on Gametracker. thats pretty good.
Official timeout: 15:33 to play
54-39
What is up with these Valpo timeouts?
Didn’t even go a full 2 minutes between timeouts. Sheesh.
They’re trying to prolong the inevitable. They are getting run to start the second half.
Valpo has only one timeout left for the rest of the game.
Graves for threeeeee!
57-39
Graves just hit a really smooth 3. I think the size and depth are starting to get to Valpo. They’re not looking as spry in the second half.
we need some lasers to see who has the highest arc on their 3, Marcus or Will.
Foul on Zeller.
Valpo at the line. Misses both.
Lane violation, another shot, misses.
Deon for 2.
59-39
Deon has taken over the game.
How do you have negative minutes? The gametracker show a -8 for Dex and a -9 for Travis.
Jumper by Deon. 12 for him in 2nd half.
Almost a steal but he steps OOB.
61-41
Ed for 2.
63-41
how does some video-store-clerk-slacker lookin dude get a dunk off us?
Did I imagine it, or does David Wear have a sprained ankle? That would explain his lack of PT.
Hold on Valpo (Called by Hess, again, weird.)
Layup for Valpo
63-43
Travis for 2
65-43
Starting the 2nd half 9-10 (4-4 FTs) will win you a lot of games…
Valpo is gassed, and we look the best we have so far in this young season right now.
D. Wear sprained ankle last game. Must have been worse than we thought. I hope he’s ok…
Wear did something during the Central game. he came back in, but maybe it swelled up on him.
Thanks, guys. If he was able to go back into the game he hurt it in I would think that he’ll be ok soon.
Let’s hope he didn’t use Epsom salts and hot water…
Watts makes both free throws.
67-43
I gotta say again how much more comfortable Strickland and Henson look this game.
In DC, the Tar Heels are preempted for Redskins post-game coverage on Comcast Sports Net. I call that talking about sports, not sports. They do this every year and don’t bother to provide an alternate feed. Anybody got a score?
Thanks
Does anyone else find the dunk animation on Gametracker hilarious?
Heels throw it out of bounds.
Valpo for dunk
67-45
Henson fouled.
Misses both.
Looks like David’s going in.
Valpo makes a 2. 67-47
I hope this poor free throw shooting is just a one game aberration.
Henson is awful at the FREE throw line.
Blocked by Davis!
Foul on Valpo.
Davis makes first, misses second.
68-47
William, this game is ONLY on Fox Sports South…its not part of the FOX Sports Net nationwide sked…and do yourself a favor, get DirecTV and cut the cable…you’ll be happier in the long run when it comes to watching the Heels.
The word block doesn’t even do that justice uncgirl. more like extinguished the shot.
Ginyard misses three. OOB off Heels.
Valpo for three.
68-50.
D. Wear for 2. 70-50.
Valpo for 3.
70-53
Heels turn it over, foul on Strickland
7:49 to play, 70-53, Heels.
Oh dear, I can just imagine the Valpo bench getting hyped because they’re “only” down by eighteen. Ugh.
Valpo makes first, makes second.
70-55.
KILL THE SNAKE!
I have to laugh at the Gametracker’s dunk animation.
Valpo makes 3
58-70!
KILL THE SNAKE!!!!! GOOD LORD JUST KILL THE SNAKE!
poor pass by Drew.
also a Heel specialty, one guy goes off.
Drew for threeeee!
73-58
Davis for 2!
75-58!
We’re not very consistent closing out on three point shooters. We’ve gotta get better at that. The bigs have to be willing to move their feet to get out on those.
Again with the timeouts.
dont hold your breath, Marcus. we havent been consistent closing out on 3 shooters since…
well, since the 3 pt line was introduced.
Valpo for 2, foul on Deon.
75-60
Makes FT, 75-61
Of course you’re right HTTE. maybe it seems especially egregious cause I haven’t seen it in six months.
Kill the snake, please!
Foul on Marcus!
1 and 1 for Valpo.
Misses, Z with rebound.
Foul on Valpo.
Deon at the line
Makes first and second.
77-61
On a positive note, so far Deon looks much better at the line so far.
Marcus has four turnovers? Wow.
i’m happy they have to play the full game. theyre going to be in some dogfights for the next 5 games.
we’re trying some low percentage passes.
Valpo for two.
77-63
Heels throw it away, Valpo for 2.
77-65
Heels throw it away, again.
Ggggrrrr… Aaaarrrggghh…
Graves with rebound, OOB off UNC.
77-65, 3:59 to play.
KILL THE SNAKE BOYS! PLEASE!
Seems like they’re getting sloppy.
for those of you that had the over on uncgirl’s “kill the snake”, youre a winner!
just pokin, ya, girl.
Valpo for 2, 77-67
If you have a guy who’s boiling hot, does it make sense to have your WORST defender on him?
Deon for 2,
79-67
Valpo turns it over
Foul on Zeller.
poor choice in shot by Will.
as Zeller gets that foul, i was about to say that a different ref crew in a different game might call a lot more over the backs than we’re getting.
Who’s hot and who’s the worst defender?
Makes both, 79-69
LARRY FOR THREEEE!
82-69
Alright, HTTE, I’m gonna look on the bright side: They need this type of game, they need this type of game, they need this type of game…
Valpo for three
82-72
Zeller gets fouled
Makes first, makes second
84-72
Valpo for three.
84-75
Wear for two
76-75
Woods is nuclear right now, and Will is the worst defender.
I’m missing that 20 pt lead we had a while ago.
Ah. That’s who I thought you were talking about, Marcus.
86-77 off Valpo FT
Drew fouled by Valpo
Wood has 30 for Valpo and now Macpherson is going off again. Some of these shots are Iverson type one on one moves, but its amazing how many times over the years someone has a ridiculously phenomenal shooting day on us.
Drew makes both, 88-77
Foul on Valpo, McFlurry to the line.
In Will’s defense Wood did cool off soon after he started guarding him. Will Graves: Stopper?
The snake has been killed.
Final score: 88-77
2 players with 65% of Valpo’s pts.
BTW, I’m never doing play-by-play again. Too exhausting.
Go Heels!
Good game for them. They needed to be tested before they started the brutal stretch of scheduel.
Uncgirl, you can’t see it, but I’m giving you a slow clap right now. Job well done.
Claire, we appreciate it though.
Thanks guys! Glad to do it!
BTW, it was Hess who called the technical. Roy just called him out.
i like getting 48 and 19 from the Davis-Thompson-Zeller trio.
and CBS has it as 24 assists on 32 made baskets.
Thanks uncgirl50, nice win Heels.
That effort and execution gets you a 22 and 10 record and bounced in the 2nd round of the ncaas. Pitiful defensive rotation, and not only by the freshmen.
“That effort and execution gets you a 22 and 10 record and bounced in the 2nd round of the ncaas. Pitiful defensive rotation, and not only by the freshmen.”
Sure, but it’s November 15th. UNC didn’t look much better against Valpo last year, and that was on December 20th! This team has lots of growing and learning left in them, and even more time to do it.
That was one of the worst basketball games Marcus Ginyard has played as a North Carolina Tar Heel, which was evident by Roy sitting him on the bench for the final 5 minutes. The first 7 minutes of the 2nd half might have been the best execution by the Heels so far in this early season, which was then followed by atrocious effort and execution for the next 7 minutes. Still nice to have a “W” that can be used as a teaching tool, they’ll need to play much better in New York on Thursday.
I’d also add that it is going to be tough to expect consistent play until the rotation gets settled. Twelve men playing meaningful minutes makes it very difficult to have a consistent rhythm on offense or defense. I certainly don’t blame Roy for doing it; he needs to figure out what he has and there is no better time to do this than November and December.
thanks uncgirl.dickie v has got nothing on you
“The first 7 minutes of the 2nd half might have been the best execution by the Heels so far in this early season”
I didn’t think the 1st half was all that bad, either, especially on the defensive end. 34% (FG) and 29% (3FG) will win a lot of games.
“Sure, but it’s November 15th. UNC didn’t look much better against Valpo last year, and that was on December 20th! This team has lots of growing and learning left in them, and even more time to do it.”
True enough. I guess it was the effort part that bothered me more than the execution. Effort should be there now as much as later in the year, and I’m sure Roy will drive that point home in practice this week.
The Valpo coach ate up all but one TO in tripping up Heels 2nd half run. It worked. (Others are watching). Always happy with a W, but if Defense is to be this team’s Identity – as some of them have professed – they got some unmasking to do, Kingosabi!
Some observations:
Zeller is the best player on the team.
Deon continues his game on/game off MO.
Strickland is Brickland at the Line.
TGF ED. (Thank God For Ed Davis.)
On to Mo’ Betta’. On to NYC. On, Heels!
Were they ever in any real danger or was it just embarrassing down the stretch? Thanks, Comcast Sports Net for that thrilling post-game coverage of the 3-6 Redskins.
Once again guard play by opponents cause lots of problems. Lots of second half three pointers for Valparaiso as in BC and WFU last year.
First half overall looked good on paper.
It is going to be up and down this year. But this is the time of the season to learn. Roy William’s book is all about effort. I am sure it hurts him to see lax, less intense play. But ultimately the players have to see that. Hansbrough isn’t there to carry the inside game when they need it. The call on Thompson was a good thing for him as he was able to come back and recommit. He did very well in the second half. When they needed him.
Graves on defense? It seems hard for him to cover quick, small guards. It is even harder when he isn’t making a lot of outside shots.
“thanks uncgirl.dickie v has got nothing on you”
Yeah, but she has something on him. She HATES Dook.
Actually the word I would use is despise. I DESPISE dook.
no one hates Dook more than i do. no one.
Dook women got trounced today. Ha! especially satisfying after reading how they basically told a girl they’d committed to that she wasnt going to be “a good fit” anymore, just days before the end of signing period. CLASSY.
