it wasnt easy tho. i was out at a sports bar, and the game came on, but since Dook was losing, i could watch.
down the stretch, Dook is lowering shoulders, sticking out knees, bumping(or was it dry humping?) the dribbler, committing obvious offensive basket interference, all perfectly fine, apparently, and Wisconsin gets called for an all ball near steal off Scheyer.
I didn’t want to say it but that’s what it looked like to me… the, uh, bumping. Glad to see their star, Scheyer, play like a tool down the stretch. Ginyard is right, of course. The Big Ten winning the Challenge means nothing in the grand scheme of things. Their presumed best (MSU) got punked by our best (UNC)… again. So let them have the Challenge. We get to enjoy last night’s great win and tonight’s Duke loss. Go Heels!
I disagree. Ginyard doesn’t have the big-big picture in mind. We want all ACC teams which we play to win OOC games, because we need all the help we can get with RPI. Duke beats Big 10 team, their RPI goes up. We beat Duke, we get a better seed in NCAA tournament because our RPI is higher.
Don’t forget nolen smith throwing up a prayer of a layup and then grabbing it back as the ball came down without touching a thing. I don’t understand why they never even reviewed the tape on the illegal putback. Is that not a reviewable offense?
And how about the dookies’ last inbounds play (singler’s half court to scheyer)? That was terrible.
Does anyone remember the older plumlee saying that he was the most athletic at his height? That type of delusional mental state occurs when all you’ve got to compare against is the uber unathletic zoobs. The older plumlee sucks and the younger one has a long way to go.
and few tough OOC opponents come to Hansbrough Indoor Stadium.
the box score is interesting.
lil Plum, coming off wrist injury, plays 10 minutes, Ryan Kelly, ZERO. whats up with that? can you say transfer?
Singler plays 40 minutes, Scheyer 39.
and Thomas and Zoobeak combine for 0 pts, 6 boards and 6 fouls in 31 minutes.
Ratface played only 8 guys, and 3 didnt score.
I don’t know at what point recruits like Kelly figure out that Duke is not the place for them. It will be interesting to watch the progression of the Wears at UNC vs the Plumlees at Duke.
Allow me to be the wet blanket then. I don’t think a UNC player (and therefore a representative of the school) should be tweeting such a comment. It shows a lack of sportsmanship. While I agree with the sentiment, I’m a civilian.
Well, Ginyard has sort of already put himself out there on this kind of stuff by saying in the preseason he thought Duke was shady. If you watched the game last night, you saw some of that on display. I like it. I actually think we see less of the rivalry mentality from the players in recent years. Hansbrough had plenty of Duke hate but I cannot think of another UNC player who did on last season’s team.
I have to agree with TheUNCFan. As much as I hate Duke, losing the challenge gives critics more ammunition in the ACC is overrated mantra. It degrades the value of UNC beating Duke and other conference foes. Of course, if Clemson hadn’t performed their annual 2nd half choke job, I could have enjoyed the Duke loss without reservation.
I didn’t say what he said was incorrect, THF, and I too like players stoking the rivalry. I just think there are more clever, and more good-natured, ways of doing so than tweeting.
And I know Ginyard is a repeat “offender.” Not sure why Coach Williams is letting this go/continue. At worst, it casts UNC in a bad light. At best, it gives the ‘Devils locker room material.
Final word: Celebrating another team’s loss (as much or more than a win by your team) is something other fanbases might be known for, but not UNC.
I would pull for Duke any time they played Syracuse, but that’s jut my own, upstate NY, bias. I guess it would be similar to asking people from NC who you root for when NCSU and Duke play? And no, the 2012 Apocalypse is not a legitimate answer…
I will pull for NCSU vs Duke. Sometimes I pull for NCSU at times out of pity in basketball. I never pull for them in football unless they are playing Duke or SCAR.
i was in school in 82, and then absolutely pulled for State in 83. Jimmy V just made it impossible not to.
they just showed our ACC semi vs them, and the subsequent State run to the title, on Classic.
i can’t remember going ballistic, like i would today, at us letting it slip from our grasp. we were up 82-76 with 1:58 left in OT, and got outscored 15-2 the rest of the way.
multiple missed 1 and 1s contributed heavily, by the way.
I didn’t watch the Duke/Wisconsin game. Was it the typical “Duke shoots, leans into the defender, and draws the 3 point play” crap, or was it the ” draw the charge after a player is coming off of a pick and doesn’t see it” crap? Either way, I hate that kind of defense, even if it does benefit us. I want to see post players defending a shot or a drive in, not positioning their body ahead of time so they can draw a charge. Used to, post defenders would try to block or challenge the shot, now its just get in their way and hope they knock me down.
Nolan Smith managed to throw the ball up then corral it with one hand and start dribbling again.
The best one was the UW point guard got the ball of the rebound and turned to go down court. Scheyer was behind him and bump him from behind but had his hands extended up in that “look contact but I am not fouling him!” sort of way. The PG starts and stops his way down court because Scheyer is behind and keeps making contact hold his hands up the whole time. It was quite bizarre. I commented on Twitter at the time that what Scheyer did was the “shady” Ginyard was talking about.
the mistake the Wisc PG made was not coming to a complete stop. MAKE Scheyer run into you.
i wanted Lawson to do that a number of times to opponents, because there’s no way they were going to stop in time.
The whole notion of a challenge is a bit stupid to begin with. It is not as though they make much of an attempt to seed the games or locate them scientifically. They basically try to pit a couple of big market teams at the top and I am not sure what they do after that.
I wonder if there are gambling parlays on the Big Eleven-ACC challenge because that seems to be pretty much the only significance of a 6-5 outcome and I am saying that knowing the ACC has won most years, even in 2005 when the Big Ten had two Final Four teams. It is even more of a farce than that thing the media does every year where they deride a conference because some of its teams go out early in the NCAA play-offs.
Forgive me if I don’t cry a river here. To me, this “challenge” doesn’t change anything. Look at the top two teams in each conference. Who won that game? Mmm-hmm. Dook are not the 5th best team in the country. ESPN be damned. It usually takes much longer into the season for the Blue Devils predictable weaknesses to surface.
I love the fact that all ACC fans can say, “Nice Dook…way to eff this one up for the conference.” That HAS to hurt Coach Kay.
Of course I wanted to see the ACC win, but if it’s at the expense of a Dook loss, then screw the challenge. The ACC is 10-1; if that’s not a dominant conference, then show me something that is.
In terms of rooting for Dook, I feel I could only do so if they were playing the Taliban, but give K’s penchant for avoiding tough opponents, I think I’m okay there.
Commenting on the game, I thought this was supposed to be a much more atheletic and quicker Duke team? They got schooled by a team that plays slow on offense and has no interest in scoring over 60 points. The athleticism really showed there…..
The Teams that Duke has been matched up with, their average finish each year in the Big 10 is 3.7 place.
The Teams that Carolina has been matched up with, their average finish each year in the Big 10 is 1.9 place.

yeah. i couldn’t care for the acc winning it again. as long as we take care of business, we’ll be fine, even if acc is viewed as weaker.
the ppg thing is interesting. i have a thought. krat is content continuing to play the plumbros to entice the better/youngest/third plumbro to commit to dook. ryan kelly is actually a decent player caught in a bad situation. plus the zoobs is going to get no mins soon, and the lineup will shrink to 7. AND krat is going to try to run more. what a disaster! those kids will get fatigued by january no matter how hole-ly the back of their jerseys are.
clemson chokes, what’s new. the only problem i have with this tweet is that marcus is accepting that unc vs duke is a rivalry. i’d prefer that we just blow them out every game and diminish them to insignificance.
I agree. I like to think that we’ve moved far enough from Dook that our level of competition is Kansas and Kentucky.
Having said that, I can’t just turn the other cheek to Dook…not just yet. I still can’t let go of how incredibly vile and contemptuous the actions were of the “Dook fans” of the late 90s, early 00s. From the internet, to Hansbrough Indoor, and beyond, the fans relished in the fact that the UNC program was caught in the whirlwind and they were taking us behind the woodshed. Coach Kay’s teams brutalized UNC squads that were coached by Bill Guthridge and Matt Doherty…NOT Dean Smith and Roy Williams. I love that boy…

And let’s have some love for Bobby Frasor, watching the game and Tweeting from Europe – must be very early in the morning there, yes?

RPI be damned. A Dook loss is almost as good as a Tar Heel win. As far as I’m concerned, we went 2 – 0 in Big Ten/ACC Challenge!
And that, ladies and gentlemen is why Duke never plays true road games.
and few tough OOC opponents come to Hansbrough Indoor Stadium.
the box score is interesting.

^With regards to Kelly, “Transfer” isn’t the word that comes to mind… “Overrated” is.
Bring on the boos.

Ginyard was also playing to the fans somewhat.
The ACC does rise and fall as a conference. UNC does not ever want to become Notre Dame!
Beating Duke won’t mean much if they don’t have a strong program.
Clemson! How did they do that?
Saturday is going to be titanic!
I didn’t say what he said was incorrect, THF, and I too like players stoking the rivalry. I just think there are more clever, and more good-natured, ways of doing so than tweeting.

(See what I did?)
I have rooted for DOOK 2 times in my life in the modern era.
The first game against UNLV in 1991 and when we needed Wake to lose in 2005.
I doubt it will happen a third time unless Carolina needs a Duke win.
I agree with Marcus. We will be fine as long as we win. The only problem I have with Marcus’ Tweet is that he spelled Dook wrong.
pulling for Dook is never acceptable unless it gets you a kidney you need or something.
I never pull for them in football unless they are playing Duke or SCAR.
easy, State.
all my Hate is tied up in Dook.
“Sometimes I pull for NCSU at times out of pity in basketball.”
Yeah, I kind of figured State’s lack of success is a key reason as to why the Duke-UNC rivalry has become even more epic, if that was even possible.
i was in school in 82, and then absolutely pulled for State in 83. Jimmy V just made it impossible not to.
they just showed our ACC semi vs them, and the subsequent State run to the title, on Classic.

I will never root for Duke in basketball or State in football. Never. Period.
