Yeah, That’s Going To Hurt

davis

And you can bet one of those practices probably did not involve rims.

They need rim practice, big time! This Keyboard Koach might even ADD some rims around the practice court! How many chippies do they continually flub? Looked like a dozen in the last game alone. This is not an isolated event; it is not an issue that simply “will improve with time;” the attitude around the basket is FUNDAMENTAL basketball. Finesse, yes, but finesse with authority! Come on, guys! They need as much rim practice as time will allow….and then some.

    But first and foremost, literally…

Folks around here do not like to hear this, but Roy has a huge challenge on his hands with this grouping. I do not share the projection that “all will come together” in January, much as it has in past years. 2010 is such a challenge simply because he has never had a group composed of and dependent upon the play of so many bigs on the court. And there is no template left by Dean for how to assimilate them – the type of play required – into the Carolina basketball philosophy (as Dean prefers it to be called). I do not believe that the “tried and true Blue” system is going to cut it this time without modification. ROY has to do some homework, some skull work. He ought to assign one of his assistants to study the film and sets of college teams who have consummate experience coaching and winning with big players, multiple big players.* And not just beefy big players; tall, thin, agile ones. Then that needs to be synthesized and brought to Roy to study, learn, install and instill. There is simply no experience in the annals of UNC ball to instruct. And that is where the correction around the rim must originate – first, foremost, and point blank.

On another This is Primarily a Roy Issue rant: He has some issues with communication with his players. I hear that time and again in his post-game interviews. “They went out and did EXACTLY what we talked about NOT doing in the huddle,” (paraphrase) has been heard from him many times over the years. The issue is also exemplified in his book, but without commentary assuming responsibility. My belief is that it is a communication problem. When I direct my staff to do a certain task and perhaps a certain way, and then it comes back not that way, I have to ask first, “What did you hear me say when I delegated?” and in a way that is genuinely inquisitive – not assertive. That’s because I realize I did not communicate, no matter what I thought I was making perfectly clear. I believe Roy sometimes has this issue with HIS play as a team member. Too many ‘sometimes.’

Sometimes the remedy is simple, like asking each one, “What did you just hear me say?” right before breaking huddle.

    Zoomba, Heels!
*There are perhaps other contributors to this blog with the knowledge to suggest those college programs. Georgetown, for one, comes to mind as having a program with a knack for coaching bigs. And some school had those “Twin Towers” some years back…

From Deon Thmopson’s twitter: “Relaxing watching Duke play….No comment… But what I do know, is that February 10th is going to be a great day to be a Tar Heel. “
