Anything out of the Mickey D practices to discuss? Just thinking of the love fest that is getting ready to embark on Durham for the rest of this week requires me to divert my attention to next season where this stench can be washed clean. (Yes I know there is an NIT Championship to win, but difficult to get excited about that until the actual day of the game, just not the same or even close)
None will ever be as special as this one. It’s hard to imagine the frustration that had built up over 25 years since last winning in 1957. I was just a boy at the time in 1982. I can’t imagine if I’d had to wait another 25 years to see the celebration again. Instead, we just waited 11 years, then 12 more years, then 4 a mere years. That’s why I’m fine if Roy never wins another. It’s so amazingly hard. Since ’92, K has only won ONE and that was 9 years ago. He’s probably due for another after missing out in ’94, ’99, and ’04. He should have won the title one of those years — not to mention, all the other years his teams flamed out as a No. 1 seed. This is simply the law of averages catching up to us. If Duke somehow manages to lose, we will have dodged yet another bullet, but like the earlier post by C. Michael, I just don’t see it happening.
for those who don’t remember or weren’t around, the tension was palpable throughout. It always seemed like the Hoyas were on the verge of running away from us, but JW would NOT let it happen. To this day I still can’t recall another UNC game that had spring-coil tension after each possession like this one.
People always talk about Jordan and Hansbrough’s “will to win,” but James’ is right there. No surprise that every team he was on in college and the most in the pros won big.
Don’t make more of that than it is. First of all he is saying he thinks Duke will win in basketball terms. Secondly, saying Duke winning is good for the state or ACC is the PC answer. He can’t bring the hate when he asked by the media what he thinks or else the story becomes about him and K is then asked what he thinks about what Roy said, etc, etc, etc. He gave the right answer given the circumstances.
THF, don’t worry I’m not trying to start sticker-gate 2010. I just find comfort in people repeatedly telling me reasons why dook will lose. I had just talked with a friend who’s an old high school bball coach and he gave a good reasoning for why dook will lose and then I pulled up ESPN and saw that. It took the hope right out. However, Ginyard’s quote was classic.
In the 1976-77 season, UNC had a very good forward named Mike O’Koren. Well he was better than good actually. He was an All American. O’Koren had a skin problem and the Duke students mercilessly taunted him with signs of “National Acne Poster Boy”,chants, etc. Unfortunately this started well before game time and continued throughout and it was getting to O’Koren.
This was of course in Cameron Indoor Stadium. It was before K’s time.
I was at the post-game press conference as student media that night. One thing I was always impressed about Dean Smith was that he would defend and support his players no matter what. I can’t remember who won or lost the game. But that did not matter.
Smith used the whole time of his remarks to chastise the ruthless, crass, immature and just plain idiotic harangue against O’Koren. He was more upset about that treatment of his player than I ever saw him at any other time, about any other subject.
Usually a reserved and careful man, he was extremely forceful in supporting his player, who was being attacked in a sadly inappropriate way. I have never seen a coach that upset, although I would have loved to be in the room to hear Williams after Hansbrough’s facial slam.
The 1982 title game is the first game I can remember watching from beginning to end. It started me on a lifelong path as true(Carolina)blue faithful. I was a huge Lakers fan in the 80s because Big Game James played for them, likewise I became a Bulls fan because of MJ. All of it started with this game and these players and this coach for me. To me this was, is and ever shall be a shinning example of all the wonderful things that make Carolina basketball great. Thanks for posting this up THF. It’s a beautiful thing to see in this week of the Dookie love fest.
I was a part time student in 81 and 82. The 81 loss to Indiana just warmed us up for the great Franklin Street party of 1982. 52 is right that the game was absolutely a nail biter from the very beginning. Ewing goal tended several of the early shots and the ball didn’t actually go throught the net for the Heels for several minutes (ironically by Matt Doherty).
I was watching the game with about 25 others in Old Well apartments and I know the building shook after James’ big dunks. I have been told I had a good time downtown that night
BTW, check out Dean and his hand signals after Worthy’s steal……does anybody see him at all?

I was a junior in high school in 1982 at NCSSM in Durham. A good friend of mine at school had a car and lived in Chapel Hill. He offered me the chance to sneak out and go join the celebration, but I refused. I have always wished I had taken him up on the offer.
4th floor TV lounge, Morrison dorm.
when Michael hit The Shot, all 70 or 80 of us, whatever it was, jumped up and rushed the tv set. then we stood and watched the giveaway by Fred Brown, and screamed our heads off.
20 minutes later, we were on Franklin St getting painted blue.

Bullock struggled with his shot on Sunday, found it on Monday.
Marshall has played well, especially since all the guards are shoot first so he is able to be unselfish.
Barnes is looking for his jumper more than attacking. Has put on muscle apparently over the season.

Why Roy?

spot on CM, but I think you’d have to put George Lynch’s mug up on that gallery too.
^reverse mojo
Outside help’s on the way.
Reggie Bullock and Harrison Barnes came in 2nd and 3rd in McDonalds 3-point shooting contest. (Corey Joseph was 1st in shoot-off w/ Reggie)

the guy who tweets for Draft Express says ed davis is “100% gone”.
^Probably one of the surer bets of the next two months… This would put UNC at the scholarship limit for the 2011-12 season (one under for next year).

THF,
It is good for the ACC.
Here’s a little Dean Smith story for you.

well, just tuned in SprotsCenter, and the day wasn’t a total loss: at least I got to see girls wearing Dook uniforms cry!
