Duke 82 UNC 50

What is it that Woody says?

“Time to go where you go and do what you do.”

There is nothing and I mean nothing you can possibly say about this game. It was ugly in every way, shape or form so trying to make sense of it, complain about it, beat the walls, rip the players, the coach, the mascot, etc, etc, etc is quite honestly a waste of time. Feel free to do so if you like. Speaking for myself I have more important things to focus on for the rest of this weekend.

Let’s pick some good places that everyone but Henson and Zeller should visit this spring….

  • uncgirl50

We still have the ACC tourney, if we can make a good run…

  • william

I notice that someone on IC places this season on the hubris of Roy Williams.

I honestly do have questions about that. I think Roy may have convinced himself that he is such an excellent coach that it didn’t matter who he put out there on the court, that he could win. Ginyard, the Wears, Thompson and Justin Watts and he still thought he could make the NCAA Tourney.

  • unc steph

Duke came ready to play. Their defense was tight. We were once again short handed. Duke is a very hostile environment, the young guys probally were not prepared for the overwhelming fan support. Did Roy even call a timeout, I thought he may have called one but my child turned the channel?

Nobody needs to visit anywhere this spring. They will get it together you can count on that.

Like I said earlier, we will get to enjoy watching Roy wear his beloved sticker over his heart at the NCAA tournament. Get ready.

  • william

No, we do not have the ACC tourney if we can make a good run.

We have to win the ACC tourney. Period.

  • william

We have been shorthanded all year, but Ginyard was healthy.

  • uncgirl50

Ok then, we still have the ACC tourney, if we can win that…

  • carolinablue74

We have less than 25% chance of winning the ACC tourney.

  • william

Well, we barely beat Miami, the last place team in the conference by one whole game more compared to us, at home. So, I am going to say that our chances are not great to win the ACC tourney….

  • carolinablue74

@THF, so did you see anything new defensively? Roy played his same old bs defense and conceded back to back to back 3 points to start the game.

  • scl11

This team couldn’t win the Ohio Valley tournament, not to mention the ACCT even win the ACC is probably the weakest it has been in the past 20 years.

  • uncgirl50

    ^^^^And?

  • william

What did Duke shoot from 3 point range? We seem to regularly get torched from outside….

  • Heel To The End

^8 of 21. 7 were in the 1st half. they made 22 of 23 FTs.

i say again, they outscored our total score in the first half alone. 53-50.

  • 850inExile aka UNC RAJ

Ga Tech will probably run out to a 20 point lead against us in the first round of the ACC tournament… we’ll cut it back down to single digits at some point, but still losing by about 10. Our mediocrity has become that predictable this season…

  • Andy In Omaha

    Wow…..
Losing to Duke always sucks, but I think this UNC team (with the exception of maybe three players) decided to mail it in and call it a night after Duke hit those early three’s. No heart, no intensity, and no response to getting hit in the mouth. And when any team smells blood in the water like that, it’s over.
I don’t want to hear about injuries, or about how Duke starts an experienced lineup, Duke getting away with stuff/getting all the calls, or any other excuse. You wear the uniform of one of the most storied and successful sports programs in NCAA history. I know you can’t win them all, but at least show a little heart out there.

  • william

Less than 25%? You are a master of the obvious….

  • scl11

    “^^^^And?”

And continue to puff, puff, pass so you can keep hope alive for the ACCT.

  • It won’t happen. And forget the NIT, who wants that additional embarrasment.

  • william

I can’t remember ever losing to Duke by 32 points before….

  • uncgirl50

scl11, that’s really annoying. You know, I can be a happy positive person without doing drugs. The only thing we can do is hope. Without hope, we have nothing.

  • william

I guarantee you they are not passing up the NIT. Dean Smith is one of the main people responsible for the NIT format. You guys should stop with that because we will be playing in the NIT, just like Florida did. I am not even sure it is a choice anymore. Maryland said they didn’t want to go a couple of years ago and ended up playing.

Long story short: the NIT used to be an independent tournament.

It is now owned by the NCAA. UNC will play.

  • 850inExile aka UNC RAJ

^^I think they said it was our worst margin of defeat since the 1960′s

  • Heel To The End

i imagine the plan from K was that if we were going to continue the sagging D from the last 2 games, and not switch on screens, then they should shoot the 3.

i am not an defensive expert, so i will leave it to someone else whether it wouldve been wise to switch when you dont have the best athletes, or a deep bench.

  • Andy In Omaha

“so did you see anything new defensively? Roy played his same old bs defense and conceded back to back to back 3 points to start the game.”

I know that was directed at THF, but it looked like UNC came out in a man defense. Last time I checked, Roy wasn’t wearing a jersey. However, I did notice that Ginyard and Graves gave up three’s in the opening minutes of the game. Ginyard was at least responsible for two in the first half, as he thought it more appropriate to make sure the slashing Brian Zoubek didn’t drive the ball; he double-teamed him, leaving Scheyer wide open.
With the way Duke was shooting from the perimeter in the first half, a zone probably would have not been any more effective. It looked like UNC tried zone for a little bit after that, actually, but the result was the same.

  • william

Who said anything was wrong with doing drugs? Alcohol is a drug and so is Viagra….

  • william

I think Maryland beat us by a similar margin in 2003.

  • Heel To The End

^^speaking of which, i think its time for a drink. :)

  • ^^OK we’ll go to the NIT if we qualify. Don’t you have to have a better than .500 record to go? OK maybe we won’t go.

  • 850inExile aka UNC RAJ

Does anybody honestly think we can win an NIT game? I mean, if there is one thing that this team excels at it is finding more and more ways to embarass itself. A first round exit from the NIT would fit that bill perfectly. Why bother?

  • Andy In Omaha

william, didn’t Maryland beat us by 50 in Doherty’s last year?

  • Thank the Passer

    And caffeine.

  • uncgirl50

William, I find both drugs and alcohol completely disgusting. No offense to those of you who drink or in fact, do drugs. But it’s not my thing.

  • william

Just think if Ginyard hadn’t had all those injuries, why Duke might have gone 0-21 from three point range….

  • william

Well, at least we know not to invite you to our parties….

  • Heel To The End

^^^this vodka disagrees, uncgirl, but you cant go wrong doing no drugs or alcohol. kudos.

  • ^ I’ll drink to that

  • Thank the Passer

Strickland hasn’t been the same since he made that corner 3 against(?) and got bitched out by Roy.

  • 850inExile aka UNC RAJ

^^^^Right – but I think they said it was the worst margin of defeat / largest margin of victory in the Carolina/Dook series since sometime in the 1960′s

  • Heel To The End

i have a hard time imagining Deon getting excited to play in the NIT.

  • uncgirl50

William, what makes you think I would want to go? Kidding, kidding.

  • william

    I bought a bottle of Haiti Rum since I don’t have a cell phone….

  • I think Roy gelded Strickland

  • 850inExile aka UNC RAJ

^^^Who said Deon had to play? If he wanted to just stay home I’d be fine with that.

  • Andy In Omaha

HTTE, leave him home, then. If you let Brian Zoubek of all people own you like that, then I think it says something about getting excited to play at all.

  • william

    Rhum Betancourt 3 Stars…. Haiti’s finest….

  • Thank the Passer

I just did a Jaeger-bomb. Won’t Sean May be back from his foot injury if we make it past next Friday?

  • william

I think we should let Haase coach the rest of the year and let Roy recharge his batteries or lightsword or power ring or whatever….

  • william

Yeah, but there is no way we can get past Maryland since they just beat us by 40 points….

  • Heel To The End

i wonder who will be healthy by thursday, and who will sprain an ankle in practice tuesday.

  • william

Matt Doherty must be laughing his ass off….

  • Thank the Passer

Anyone know why Mcdonald didn’t play?

  • william

I heard Ed might be back….

  • Andy In Omaha

On a lighter note, the Blue-White spring football game is around 4 weeks away…….

  • carolinablue74

    @Andy

My post was a followup of a comment I made a some time ago. I said that Roy never believes in changing his defense unless he gets his tail whipped. I said if we play man to man without switching on screens Duke will torch us from the 3 point line. Sure enough that is what happened. Zoubek sets high ball screens and Scheyer shoots and the guy guarding Zoubek never once switched to Scheyer during those opening minutes. It’s as if Zoubek would slash to the basket for a dunk. In any case it is quite apparent Roy does either does not believe or does not know how to coach any other defense other than the same “fight through the screens” bs.

  • uncgirl50

    ^^^^Pulled hamstring.

  • william

If Leslie had played, we would have definitely kept it under 33 point….

  • TexasFan11

TtP, McDonald strained his hamstring in practice yesterday.

  • unc steph

Ed ain’t going to be back. He is saving himself for the draft.

  • Heel To The End

ed will not be back. how is he even practicing? i dont believe he is.
McD pulled a hammy in practice.

  • Thank the Passer

Watch Roy move Deon back to PF to make room for him. Henson goes back to the 3 and his regular 8 min.

  • william

If we had to lose, then we might as well lose big. In a way, the first game was just as embarrassing as this one. UNC without anybody at all who can score is pathetic.

  • carolinablue74

On a separate note does anyone here know why Henson was substituted with Wear after he dunked? People in IC think its because of him screaming at Plumlee who tried to foul him, you know showing emotion on the game like that is very unsportsmanlike according to Roy!!

  • Thank the Passer

Thanks for the info on Leslie. I was at the UL-Syracuse game today and didn’t check in.

  • Heel To The End

    ^^thats probably why. shrug.

have a laugh and watch Zach Galifianikis on SNL.

  • unc steph

william- I think we can score but Roy has done a number on these kids. I believe he is the one who is a little unstable this year and that unstableness has rubbed off onto the players. This is ALL good ole Roy’s fault.

  • carolinablue74

@unc steph, I don’t know if he has done a number on all the kids but he has destroyed the confidence of some, most notably Strickland’s and he has vastly mismanaged Henson and Zeller by favoring untalented players like the Wears and giving way too much playing time to Thompson than he deserves.

  • TxTarheel

but can they score…really, can they.

maybe Zach spikes the staff drinks with roofies…

in other news, there is either a country song or a gospel song to properly state the effects of this season. i bet George Jones or Merle Haggard had a remedy for times like this…

  • Heel To The End

    we will soon forget tonight.

  • LarryS

Will had little mobility tonight and no ability to get open. (Not much better than 60% I’d say) Will, Larry, & Dex combined 5 pts and 0/3 from 3 pt. That hurts. I’ll add that even though we’re not used to seeing Deon be real fluid or quick, he was just not right either…don’t think he ever really got his back loose.

Duke played good D, and even if we had played well, it still would have been a tough night. Duke was more than ready.

I had almost rather seen Justin Watts, who actually played a few minutes of decent defense and could have gotten open as well as Will, just stay in the game with Z and John. And John should have gotten 30-32 min. instead of 23. Oh well, too late to strategize at this point.

I don’t know how Dex, Larry, and Leslie can really improve over the summer, but they need to do a bunch of shooting. I think the recruits will really help (BTW-Kendall’s team just won their championship tonight and he was MVP), and I keep having these good feelings about Kendall….don’t know why. I just think he’s going to be much better than everyone expects.

What else can you say . I’ll just say that I hope we get Will, Deon, and Leslie healthy for Ga.Tech, and have a much better game.

  • Andy In Omaha

    cb74,
I have mixed feelings on switching on screens, as it gives the offense an opportunity to expose a mismatch. Since Deon was on Zoubek tonight in the man setup, do you think Deon could have done a better job on stopping Scheyer from hitting a moving three point shot or dribble penetration? If there was someone more athletic on Zoubek, then I would say to make the switch.
As far as Zoubek slashing for a dunk, I would say that’s about as likely to happen as UNC making the tournament. Zoubek is so turnover/foul prone that Marcus shouldn’t have even bothered with him.

  • unc steph

I mean who would want to score just to hear your coach belittle you in a press conference right after the game and say what a bone headed play that was?

  • Thank the Passer

    ^”Sing Me Back Home”

  • carolinablue74

    Andy,
a good switch need not necessarily have to be about stopping the drive, but mainly taking away open looks. When Zoubel sets a screen, Scheyer steps slightly back to give himself some room for the shot he is not looking for the drive. The reason Deon did not switch is because of two reason, you must know how to do it, that requires coaching, you cannot stand behind the player setting the pick, you have to stand close and to the side and willing to step out in a fraction, secondly you have to be fast. Unfortunately it seems we are not only not well coached on switching screens but Deon also happens to be the only big man on our team with lead feet.

  • DeanForever

I’m gonna be brief and then go to bed.

So many of you just need to learn how to stomach this. I doubt any of you hate this worse than I do, but I’ve managed to get ahead of the anger, doubt, and…whatever else. So we bottomed out this year. This year will soon be a footnote, simple as that. What won’t be a footnote is all of the rediculous crap about Roy ruining this team. Enough with that. He failed with this group, yes. He’ll have you all high-fiving and jumping for joy a year from now. Within the next 365 days, he’ll again be good ol’ Roy and he’ll be beating Dook and whoever else get in his way. This year will pump an additional five years into the HOF career of Roy Williams. He will do whatever it takes to obliterate the memory of this pathetic excuse of a team.

To hell with the 2009/2010 season…let it burn.

    I await the Pheonix.

  • Thank the Passer

    Sweet dreams and Amen!!!

  • Heel To The End

shocked Tweets from Sean and Ty.

    “Unreal” from ed davis.

  • uncgirl50

    Amen DeanForever!

  • BuonRotto

I was never really down on the team until tonight. I think there us talent but there is no team and no fire in their guts. What was disgraceful was their lack of passion as much as anything though obviously their execution was just as awful. DeanForever is right that people will forget a forgettable season, but not competing in the Duke game is a cardinal sin, plain and simple. The players should be disgusted and ashamed. They should be angry at themselves and each other. They should not however give up on themselves or each other, nor take it out on each other except to demonstrate an expectation with one another to be excellent. I hope they all practice together in the off-season, find their rapport, push one another and find that fire. And practice passing and free throws, as fundamentals go

  • rathskellar68

No NIT, please. We don’t deserve post-season play in any form whatever. Plus we’ll just lose the first game, piling embarrassment upon embarrassment.

We can analyse the multitudinous reasons in liesure, but the conclusion is stark: This year it was not to be. With any luck we will be out of this nightmare by midnight on Thursday, and able to think about what cannot help but be a better future.

I can’t see why anyone would want us to play in the NIT. It will not significantly change our record, and it will not change in any way whatever the nature of the team or the season. That nature is such that it should be put out of its misery ASAP. If there were some legal way to avoid playing Thursday, I would take it. We fans simply must understand that the present team is not going to provide any good news. Therefore, please, let it provide no news.

  • ^I agree. Let this nightmare be over, the sooner the better.
