Wake Forest vs Kentucky is the game to watch. Why? Because there is a good chance Chas McFarland pisses Demarcus Cousins off enough for nasty things to go down. Kansas will take on Northern Iowa. Keeping an eye on the #1 seeds is always a good idea since you never know what might happen.
Only one of these match-ups is according to see and that is the Kansas St-BYU game. Of the six games that could have ended up with a double digit seed, five of them have one.
So will it be more upsets or water finding its level?
Here is your schedule for Saturday.
#2 Villanova vs #10 St. Mary’s, 1:05 PM
#5 Butler vs #13 Murray St., 3:20 PM
#6 Tennessee vs #14 Ohio, 3:35 PM
#1 Kansas vs #9 Northern Iowa, 5:40 PM
#3 Baylor vs #11 Old Dominion, 5:45 PM
#3 New Mexico vs #11 Washington , 5:50 PM
#2 Kansas St. vs #7 BYU, 8:10 PM
#1 Kentucky vs #9 Wake Forest, 8:15 PM

“Because there is a good chance Chas McFarland pisses Demarcus Cousins off enough for nasty things to go down”
Would anyone be surprised if Cousins pulled an “Iron Mike” and bit Chas’ ear off?
^its Huggies vs Pampers!!
you go you mf bracket bustin St. Mary’s!!!
dook’s alleged 2-seed….gone.
SMC just lit my bracket on fire. Why did I have ‘Nova going to the FF??? Oh, yeah… because I didn’t want to pick Duke. That’s what I get for allowing emotion to cloud my judgment…
Look at that list of teams playing today. I’ve never seen so few Big Name Teams in the second round of the tourney. There’s more of them in tomorrows games. Parity!
St. Marys, Baylor or Old Dominion will be in the Elite 8.
dook’s bracket is so weak its hilarious. Go Cal!!!
What a great win by UNC … totally gutsy. Where were these guys all year? LD2 played smart: He had seen the drive to the basket was there all day against MS St. and took it straight to the rim for the winning basket. Now if State wins, Sidney Lowe may forget he’s the coach suit up if he takes his team to Carmichael. Oh, yeah, there’s another tournament?
Nova played as poorly as everyone in America, except those on the committee, knew they would? shocking!
Nova totally screwed my bracket over. CM, I feel your pain. I had Nova in the Final Four. Le sigh.
Well, if there is anything good to come of this, at least it will cheapen a FF appearance, if Duke makes it. And if they don’t, then it will be a colossal “Fail.”
espn said they were down to 54% perfect brackets after Georgetown lost. wonder what it is now.
Digger, Bilas and Vitale all lost 25% of their FF today already.
^Zero. Going into the last game of yesterday’s PM session there were 2, but both of them incorrectly picked Utah St. to beat TAMU.
i remember Murray St giving us a strong game about 4 or 5 years ago.
“Look at that list of teams playing today. I’ve never seen so few Big Name Teams in the second round of the tourney. There’s more of them in tomorrows games. Parity”
No, not parity I think. Just no great teams this year, though Kentucky could end up close if it realizes its potential. We’ll have to wait and see how many seeds, outside the top 4, end up in the Final Four.
History shows us the top 4 seeds have been in the Final Four 92% of the time.
^yeah, parity is not the word i have felt. not sure if its guys that went early, coincidence, or what, but its a down year overall.
This year’s UK team (in terms of talent) reminds me of UNC in 2007. Loads of ability, but not much seasoning. The key for UNC was that most of those guys were around for the following 2 years. I doubt the same will be true for UK, especially because this year’s draft is so much weaker than the 2007 draft was.
i believe that Deon became #1 in games played by an ACC player.
149 to Chrissy Laettner’s 148.
excellent.
Kentucky has 4 players projected for the NBA first round, 3 of them lottery picks.
Lack of experience or being in big time situations, Wall’s propensity to turn the ball over, and their having had to win so many games near the end makes them vulnerable.
Even with all that, they could be a very special team. If they hadn’t lost Fetch, for recruiting violations, they could be a team for the ages.
^^Two straight years a Heel has knocked a Dookie out of the record books. I like this trend…
Way to go Deon! This NIT experience is getting more and more love
^at this point, i’ll take what i can get.
games played
all time program wins
a possible 20-win season
helping Roy’s winning perentage get back to 80%.
anything, anything at all.
I do believe that when everyone looks at what the Heels went through this year, they will have to mention the fact that they swallowed their pride, played in the NIT, and knocked off a #1 seed. Also, Roy has coached his way out of: a losing season, a split season (17-17), and may be on his way to 20 wins. If this team wins 20, that accomplishment alone would be most impressive.
Hell, I’m impressed that they’ve pulled out the two wins they have in the NIT! That looks just as strange typed out as I was saying it myself in my head.
In response to some earlier posts, I too believe that the word “parity” is a blanket word, used to tatoo what has been a down year for DI men’s hoops.
William, how do I quantify “down”?
I can sum it up by using two Stones records as the metaphor for this season.
2009 was like “Exile on Main Street”, a record in which even the filler stuff was pretty good. This year has been more like “Goats Head Soap”, with the obvious hit “Angie” being the only well-known track from that record. Kansas have been the “Angie”, while Kentucky have been the “Star ——”, that track that you can’t resist playing, and it never seems to measure up until you find yourself repeating the chorus over-and-over.
For everyone else, I apologize. To William, I hope you’re feeling that one
NCState is not cooperating.
maybe, subconsciously, they dont want any part of us in Carmichael.
UAB is either being made to look pretty good, or couldve gone to the NCAA.
Murray State = Fail. Down 2 with 18 seconds to go and you don’t even get a shot off?? Wow…
^the Racers without the ball didnt exactly get themselves open. they barely moved.
Wolfpack with 17 points in the half. good grief.
^Yup. The whole thing fell apart when the first guy drove too far and had nowhere to go.
Not looking good for a game at Carmichael, NCSU down 37-17 at the half…
Interesting tidbit about UAB: Demarcus Cousins originally committed to the Blazers, but he would not sign an LOI unless UAB agreed (in writing) that they would release him if they fired Mike Davis. Amazing how UAB’s decision affected CBK this season.
Kansas having some difficulty figuring out Northern Iowa.
Question: Does W&M, MSU, and UAB represent a tougher road to NYC than Duke will face going to the FF?
I’m am ALMOST being serious…
William and Mary vs Arkansas-PineBluff. uh…yeah.
Mississipi St vs California…hm.
State down 25 with just over 7 minutes left.
Oh well, the thought of Carmichael was fun while it lasted.
in Sagarin ratings, a world where VT is properly higher rated than Utah St,
William and Mary: 92
Ark-PB: 219 (140 slots below Wofford)
Mississippi St: 48
California: 24
UAB: 61
Texas A&M: ? 13
of course, the last two games for us are on the other team’s home court.
ruh roh…its buttclenching time for Kansas.
UNI winning would completely obliterate my bracket, but screw it, I’m still rooting for them!
If UNI wins, I’m officially really glad I did not put money on a bracket this year.
ugh. its tough, when i want every team available to beat dook, if they are needed.
double ruh roh…
Aldrich hurt!
Baylor is tied with ODU with 13 minutes to go. Talk about paving the road for Duke. Of course, the same thing was said about UNC in 2005 when UConn, KU and UF lost in the first 2 rounds, and teh Heels got 2 real hard games in Syracuse.
refs are swallowing their whistles a bit.
Northern Iowa – 3:38 – Up 6
Can they? Will they?
I want KU to feel the pain.
I’m torn between rooting for the underdogs and rooting for the bracket savers.
Kansas if you screw up my bracket…
are you kidding with that early shot? HUGE.
The mentality of a 3 pt. shooter:
“But coach, I was open”
Its hard to win, when you’re supposed to, another Self choke job in the tourney.
Feel the pain Kansas, 2 more to go….
the sound youre hearing is every bracket in America being ripped up.
that 3 won the game. incredible cojones.
if that was a 9 seed, i should watch more hoops than I do.
How about them Panthers?
KANSAS!!! My bracket is SCREWED! UGH.
there’s a lot of KU fans that did not, but those that slammed the door on Williams for leaving…enjoy the silence
and UNI intervenes on the Heels’ side in the all-time win battle!!!
Hey Kansas fans, Roy Williams never did you like that.
And with Baylor’s win I finally get a S16 team right! Wow, what a tournament!!
Kansas stuck at one ahead of us in wins.
^i’m surprised New Mexico wasnt in dook’s bracket. what is the deal with Washington? they cant be THAT good.
Dear Kansas,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rX7wtNOkuHo
Sincerely,
Tar Heel Nation
Looks like I am not going to be seeing Kansas next weekend.
^can you put that on infinite loop ?
Does Cal have a realistic chance of beating Duke?
Harrison Barnes screws Duke.
N. Iowa screws KU.
The state of Iowa has been very good to UNC this year…
^Hahahaha!
^^^In this tourney, ANYONE has a realistic chance of beating ANYONE…
^any team that doesnt spot dook 10-15 points before even stepping on the floor by being scared. so tired of that. no one seems to give US scared.
maybe because we dont grab*.
Dear Kansas,
You really have something to cry about now.
I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you go “Davids”! now let’s go Deacs!
Well you gotta love KU coming up short – Remember 2008: Never Forget
1061 and 1062 have the two games.
looks like this will be the Smith/Wall show
bout over for Wake. foul trouble is going to do them in.
***
Kansas now has a record 3 2nd round losses as a #1 seed.
LD Williams needs to provide some offense & spark
BYU having to deal with Mike Woods AND Mike Eades in stripes. yikes.
***
Adam Lucas:
Although the Tar Heels have looked confused in some late-game situations this year, they frequently practice a similar situation. The way they normally do it, the point guard has less than five seconds to drive the ball the length of the court. This time, with a few extra seconds, Drew had the luxury of weaving his way through traffic, then encountering the formidable Jarvis Varnado, a man who has more career blocked shots than Sam Perkins and Brendan Haywood combined and who had already swatted four Tar Heel attempts.
–
more than Perkins and Haywood COMBINED. 80 more than Duncan’s ACC record 481. wow.
^Yeah, LaPhonso Ellis, who was a really good player and shot blocker for ND, made a comment during the game that is you doubled his career total it would still be a lot less than Vanardo has.
KState playing like a real #2….hence, their absence from the dook bracket.
Beggar’s Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street is a run second only to the Beatles’ run of Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper’s, The Beatles and Abbey Road.
Exile on Main Street, a double album, was similar in concept and critical acclaim to the The Beatles (The White Album), although the sales were not nearly as good.
Unfortunately, the Stones then followed up with the Bowie-inspired Goats’ Head Soup (and the Beatles with the less than inspiring Let It Be), and would never again reach the pinnacle. Some Girls, Tattoo You and Voodoo Lounge were blips up, but not really close to the Beggar’s-Exile run. Maybe Mick Taylor was a better guitarist than that guy from the Small Faces who took his place….
this has been a great weekend, but i have always thought this Sunday is the worst of the 4 days.
CBS insists on cramming all 8 games in, playing 3 and 4 at a time, because heaven forbid that 60 Minutes take a damn week off.
they could even add a game or two to saturday. there was only one early game today.
its most annoying when you are trying to follow interesting matchups.
well, the plus side for Wake is they can look forward to this being recorded as a win in a couple years when this tournament is stripped from Kentucky by the NCAA.
You know THF I was just wondering how Kansas fans could find a way to blame Roy Williams for that loss when I saw your comment.
One set of whiny egotistical fans down, 3 more sets to go!!!
Wake is starting to quit like UNC usually (until today) has done this season….
Make it to the NIT finals and UNC keeps a lead on KU in all time wins.
If Cal can not play scared against Duke this could be a great weekend…….
Ish Smith is not qualified to even be mentioned in the same sentence as John Wall, and I don’t even think John Wall is especially good.
By the way, all you guys who doubted Stephen Curry…. Nah, too easy….
We need Syracuse, Kentucky and Duke to lose now. Let someone else win besides UNC….
Kentucky is looking like Carolina did right before it rolled everybody in the final 2 weeks of the tournament…..
only difference is they will get a style that will be difficult for them to play against in either Cornell or Wisconsin, Gonzaga actually thought they could run with the Heels…….
espn.com has the Kansas-UNI score highlighted blue on their front page. never seen that before. they think its a pretty big deal!
I thought there weren’t any great teams in this tourney—UK sure looks like one to me.
Mac gets in a shot lol.
Kentucky playing Wake this year is quite different from 09 UNC facing a ranked LSU team.
LSU was a good team last year though you can argue Wake has NBA talent, at least in Aminu.
Ish Smith is horrible. He made a big shot to win back the game that he, himself, had basically lost.
Kansas apparently is having a locker room meltdown:
http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/story/13090780/its-a-crying-shame-kansas-didnt-want-it-sooner
^Exactly. My UK friend keeps telling me to stop talking about last year, but I just ask him, “so what do you think you’ll be talking about next year?”
Wake needed to give UK their best shot, which meant keeping the Wildcats off the offensive glass. The fact that Kentucky are shooting like 102% from the field doesn’t help.
Eric Beldsoe is playing his way into being a lottery pick.
Kansas found itself in a dogfight similar to the one UNC faced vs LSU last season. The difference is Ty Lawson refused to let UNC lose the game. He scored 21 points in the 2nd half and made big play after big play. Danny Green’s three on Ellington’s tap out rebound sealed the deal. Teams as experience as Kansas are supposed to rise to the occasion in those situations but for whatever reason the Jayhawks did not. Only they know why.
^^Bledsoe keeps this up it will be a Corey Brewer like run.
^^best thing Doyel has ever written.
“No one wants to hear that crap now.”
Kansas was overconfident and lazy. Self probably was, too. despite Bucknell.
It is very, very difficult to win a national title. For all the bellyaching about 1984, UNC lost to Indiana and Bobby Knight, and UNC had not been as dominant that year overall, as Kansas has been this year.
Aside from 1984, I don’t think UNC has ever failed to win the national title during a season where we had the best team. Even in 1977, aside from the injuries, Marquette was every bit as talented as we were, as were probably Kentucky and UNLV.
I guess you could consider Kansas’s loss to be like Stanford’s back in 2000, but Stanford hadn’t been nearly as dominant during that period as has Kansas the past several years, plus, Stanford lost to a UNC team that had Brendan Haywood and Joe Forte.
You guys should have heard the radio commentary with Bill Frieder (I was going back and forth to the grill). The radio guys were way more sympathetic to N. Iowa than the television guys. They kept talking about how the N. Iowa guys were as slow as dirt and still beating Kansas….
^1998.
(and Roy’s Kansas lost to Rhode Island in round 2 that year, as a #1)
We were not clearly better than Kentucky in 1998. That team had serious lapses during the year. They were terrible against Georgia, NC State, Maryland, one time, Duke, in the second half at Duke, and then in the Final Four. They were not a complete team because they did not have depth or reliable outside shooting…. I still liked that group from 97-98, though.
And yes, I never said that Roy had not had similar defeats, just not UNC, thankfully. People on here who think it will be so easy to get back to the Final Four forget that Roy had zero Final Fours from 1993-2002.
You forgot needing OT to beat Charlotte in the 2nd round. Losing at Duke was a depth issue, nothing more. Duke was good that season and so was MD. The near loss at Georgia and the loss at NCSU was inexcusable though.
i hear ya. i just think we shouldve won that year.
Duke was just a touch behind UNC in 1998. UNC had problems with MD that year, too. Last year, however, when UNC was playing on all cylinders, nobody in the country could touch them. That is something that has seldom been true for any team in the country since the UCLA days.
That being said, some of that difference has to due with chance, i.e., what other teams are good in the conference and the country, and what teams match up well with you. I am not sure that last year’s squad could beat the 1998 squad in an imaginary game, but with reference to the season in which they played, last year’s squad was slightly more dominant.
awww…poor babies. i hope all the soft bracket talk starts to eat at them.
http://www.sportingnews.com/college-basketball/article/2010-03-20/duke-tires-hearing-about-its-alleged-soft-bracket
^Well, there’s one way for Duke to prove the South is, in fact, a tough bracket…..lose in the 2nd Round or the Sweet Sixteen. That would show ‘em.
Bill Self letting it fly in the post-game presser:
