These Guys Were Ready to Play Duke

The 1998 UNC-Duke game in the Dean Dome which, like this one, was the first of the season. This game was odd in the fact UNC blew Duke out twice. They did it once through the first half and early into the second. Duke rallied to within three and UNC promptly blew the Blue Devils out again. This game also included the great almost dunk in UNC history with Vince Carter backrimming the pass off the backboard from Ed Cota.

A little over seven hours to go. Who’s ready?

Whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo! Can you feel the tension? I know I can! I can feel it down in my plums.

  • “Wojo for three…airball”. Love it. Great stroll down memory lane. Looking forward to adding another chapter tonight.

  • Henson…P-P-P!

    (PLEASE POSTERIZE PLUMLEES)

I loved this team as well as the 1997 team. It’s a damn shame they didn’t win it all either year- probably two of our most talented and gifted teams ever.

^^thats been done. on a BLATANTLY awful “charge”.

  • TarDeac

That was my first UNC/Duke game, and I still get chills seeing Vince standing on top of the scorers’ table afterwards. Does anyone know where I can buy the video of this game? The ACC store doesn’t have it for some reason.

My first every UNC/Duke game also, TarDeac. What a good first one, eh? That game had the three most distinct momentum swings I can remember in a college game. Carolina seizing control, then going cold/Dook warm culminating with a Mahktar Technical Foul for slamming the ball, then an absolute UNC blitzkrieg.

    Glorious!

  • TarDeac

Absolutely. Blitzkrieg is a great descriptor for what happened in the last four minutes.

Im all the way out at Arizona State wishing I was back home for this game. The people out here are showing a lot more love than expected, wearing my ‘Beat Duke’ shirt around campus and the town today showed me that the hate for for Dook is a national thing. Cant wait for tonight. Lets gooo!

The Famous missed dunk game. Man! i still wish Vince finished that dunk

If not for Makhtar Ndiaye and the stupid “6 starters” junk, this would have been my favorite Tar Heel team of all time.

My nostalgic favorite UNC-Duke game was in ’92 when Montross got bloodied up and they ended #1 Duke’s 20-something game winning streak. My second favorite, and most memorable, was in ’05 when they came back from an 11-pt. deficit with Marvin Williams’ late-game heroics. Both games were 75-73.

I don’t know if tonight could or will be a classic, but I’m just as excited as I ever remember being. This game just never gets old.

Anyone know who the Raycom crew is? If it is Mike Patrick or Tim Bryant, I just might stomach trying to tune out Vitale.

  • Announcing crews:

ESPN: Dan Shulman, Dick Vitale and Jay Bilas
ACC Network: Tim Brando and Dan Bonner.

And ESPN is NOT blacked out anywhere for this game. Part of the new deal.

I am watching ESPN because I think the HD will be better and Shulman/Bilas will cancel out Vitale. Bonner is okay but I can’t deal with Tim “Iron Unkind” Brando

  • deepenwide

How about the officials? Do they announce them in advance?

  • deepenwide

    Carolina 85
    dook 68

  • I saw it tweeted earlier that Karl Hess was on the game. Not officially confirmed but would not surprise me.

  • scl11

With you there Brian (aka THF), I can’t stand Brando, so I’ll stomach Vitale. I will flip to Raycom if the Kansas/Baylor game runs long though. That is one advantage of the duel telecasts.

  • Heel To The End

    i wouldnt mind a 33-pt win.
Tim Brando is pretty up there on the annoying list. he says
the same things all the time.

  • scl11

^plus Brando is so far up K’s ****** that he can’t call the game without Bias……..

If we could replace Vitale with just Bilas, that would be a dream crew on ESPN

Or maybe add Hubert for a little Yin and Yang with Bilas

Watching that just reminded me how much I enjoyed watching Ed Cota play. He absolutely owned Wojo! It’s a shame that Dean was not coaching that team.

  • ChrisFromMoTown

I was at this game. Rushing the court at the end was epic. If only had Vince Carter been able to throw down that off-the-backboard alley-hoop…
