Tar Heels on the College Football Watch Lists

Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

It's the time of year where previews and watch lists start making the rounds. There was no shortage of UNC players on the various college football watch lists out there.

Maxwell Award(Player of the Year): Bryn Renner, QB

Bednarik Award(defensive POY): Kareem Martin, DE

Mackey Award(Most outstanding tight end): Eric Ebron, TE

Rimington Trophy(premier center): Russell Bodine, C

Ray Guy Award(top punter): Thomas Hibbard, P

Nagurski Trophy(most outstanding defensive player): Tre Boston, S and Kareem Martin, DE

Outland Trophy(most outstanding interior lineman): James Hurst, OT

Jim Thorpe Award(best defensive back): Tre Boston, S

Lombardi Award(best lineman): James Hurst, OT

Bilentkoff Award(most outstanding receiver): Quinshad Davis, WR

Davey O'Brien Award(best QB): Bryn Renner, QB

Being named to the list is a sign(I suppose) you are considered one of the better players in the country at your position or people know who you are. The reality is only about five of the players named on each list have a legitimate chance at actually winning the award. Bryn Renner is poised to have an outstanding year for UNC, possibly the best for any QB in Tar Heel history but he isn't coming anywhere near winning the awards he is on a watch list for. In fact the only player who might have a chance to win one of these is TE Eric Ebron who is going to be a frequent target for Renner. He also happens to be really good and fits the new tight end prototype that's out there now.

And yes, I am probably not the only one who is scratching their head a little at Tre Boston showing up on two of these lists. Hopefully he can be that good, especially since South Carolina has three players on the watch list for best receiver.
