There will be one Tar Heel team in the Sweet Sixteen.
The #4 seeded UNC women got 24 points and 12 rebounds from freshman Diamond DeShields on the way to a 62-53 win over #5 seed Michigan State in the 2nd Round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Tar Heels' performance was a complete reversal from barely squeaking by the the #13 seed UT-Martin on Sunday. UNC trailed by as much as 18 in that game before rallying to win 60-58. This game proved to be far easier for the Heels as UNC jumped out to a 12-2 lead to start the game and a nine point lead at halftime. The Tar Heels left little doubt in the second half going on a 21-4 run through the first ten minutes to effectively seal the game. Allisha Gray and Latifah Coleman each had 10 points to go along with DeShields double-double.
Next up for UNC is a trip to Stanford, CA where they will face the winner of #1 South Carolina and #9 Oregon State. If the Heels face the Gamecocks it will be a rematch from earlier in the season. UNC knocked off South Carolina 74-66 back on December 18th
