For the past two weeks, there have been numerous political figures speaking at both the Democratic and Republican National Conventions. Many of these speeches were filled with both powerful messages and inspiring words.
I decided to take a look back at some of the best speeches given by Tar Heels (either athletes or those associated with Tar Heel athletics). I am sure I have left some out that you fondly remember, so please feel free to add any in the comment section below.
Charles Kuralt Bicentennial Speech
- The famous “What is it that binds us to this place...” speech that we have heard at numerous UNC athletic events.
- Fast Forward: 11:50 - Kuralt throws in a great dig at Duke.
Michael Jordan Hall of Fame Speech
- I didn’t add this necessarily for the quality of the speech, even though Jordan mentions Dean Smith in the video, but because the greatest meme of all time originated from this speech (Parental Warning - Language).
- Fast Forward: 1:02 to 2:43 - Jordan Crying Meme
Roy Williams 2009 Speech
- This was Williams’ speech in the locker room after winning the 2009 national championship, with highlights from the season mixed in for fun.
Marcus Paige’s Senior Speech
- I could have easily added both Joel James’ and Brice Johnson’s speeches to the list, but Paige’s speech was extremely emotional.
- Is it getting a little dusty in here?
Anson Dorrance Speech on Mia Hamm
- A Hall of Fame coach giving a speech on a Hall of Fame soccer player...both Tar Heels.
Sylvia Hatchell on Stuart Scott Speech
- This video shows what being a part of the Carolina family is really all about.
Stuart Scott’s Jimmy V Award Speech
- No words needed, but tissues are.
James Worthy Hall of Fame Speech (with intro by Dean Smith)
- Dean Smith gives a great introduction for Worthy’s induction in to the Hall of Fame. (Note that the video starts over around the 4:45 mark.)
- Fast Forward: 16:15 - Worthy talks about the impact that Smith had on his life.
Larry Fedora’s First Speech at UNC
- This is the speech where Fedora introduced “Smart, Fast, and Physical” to Tar Heel fans.
- Fast Forward: 21:30 - Fedora talks about attacking like General Patton.
