Colin Moran Returns To Lineup

All-American 3B Colin Moran returned to UNC’s lineup on Wednesday night against Winthrop and boy did he make a splash.

Moran, who missed several weeks with a broken hand, went 2-4 with 2 RBIs and a home run as the Heels shutout Winthrop 2-0.

The absence of Moran, while not completely disastrous, did have a significant impact on the Heels. The Twitter account for Tar Heel Monthly tweeted out these stats comparing UNC with Moran versus Without him.

With Moran: 6.72 runs per game, .295 team batting average, 17-5 record.

Without Moran: 5.14 runs per game, .253 team batting average, 13-8 record.

During those 21 games, UNC had four losses by two runs or less. Assuming Moran’s presence is really worth 1.6 runs not to mention how a timely hit here or there can change the way a baseball game unfolds Moran’s return is a huge development.

As for any concerns about Moran getting on track quickly, he seems to have answered those.

Basketball Injury Update

Roy Williams did another Tar Heel Tour event, this time in Greensboro. Inside Carolina has a full report which mostly covered the same topics as the previous ones. Roy did discuss the status of Dexter Strickland and Leslie McDonald as they prepare to return from each having knee surgery.

Two key pieces in North Carolina’s backcourt next season are recovering from ACL injuries. Leslie McDonald sat out the 2011-12 season after tearing his right ACL during a summer league pickup game in July.

“Leslie could have played this year if it had been his senior year and he didn’t have any more eligibility,” Williams said. “He probably would have played the last 10 or 12 games and would have been able to do that. So he’s doing fine. He practiced with us down the stretch. We let him have a day off every four or five days just to make sure that we weren’t doing too much.”

Dexter Strickland tore his right ACL in the second half against Virginia Tech on Jan. 19.

“Dexter’s rehab is right on schedule,” Williams said. “I think that when school starts in the fall, he’ll be running and doing some things. And I really feel that when we start our conditioning program, which is usually around Sept. 15, it might be a little difficult for Dexter to do the whole thing, but I think by the time practice starts he should be able to go, too.”

There has probably not been enough discussion about what either of these two players might look like coming off major knee surgery. There is less concern with McDonald from the injury standpoint since he will have had over a year to rehab since the initial ACL tear last summer. The question for him lies with the fact he has not played competitive college basketball since March, 2011. When UNC takes the court in November that will be an 18 month gap for McDonald. The concern with Strickland is he will be running pretty close to the stated timetable for full recovery. As noted above, Strickland tore his ACL at Virginia Tech on January 19th which will have him at about the nine month mark when practice opens. The rehab for an ACL tear is given as 6-9 months so Strickland will be operating just past that window. Roy also indicated Strickland could miss part of the preseason conditioning program. If that is the case, it would not surprise me if Strickland struggles a bit during the first half of the season. I also think there is a chance Strickland comes off the bench early on and Roy does indeed toss the keys to freshman Marcus Paige, assuming he is fully recovered from the stress fracture he suffered last month.

Outside of the injury information there was nothing really new and yes, Roy did spend some time ripping people who rip the players that left early for the NBA. Have fun with that.

UNC-ECU Basketball Game in the Making?

According to the Fayetteville Observer it is.

The Kinston Free Press is reporting that East Carolina’s basketball team will play at North Carolina on Dec. 15. Officials from ECU and UNC said they could not confirm the information.

The Pirates are coached by Jeff Lebo, who played at North Carolina from 1985-89. Roy Williams was a UNC assistant for three of those seasons, before he left for Kansas in 1988, and a picture of the two coaches standing with Dean Smith during a coaches clinic at Auburn is on display in Lebo’s office.

ECU is 1-48 against in-state ACC schools North Carolina, Duke, N.C. State and Wake Forest, including 0-2 against the Tar Heels. The Pirates lost 79-66 at home in 1953 and 85-65 in the opening round of the 1993 NCAA tournament.

Their lone win against the Big Four came at home against N.C. State in 2007.

In addition to ECU, it would not shock me to see UNC schedule a game versus UNC Greensboro at the Greensboro Coliseum. Roy Williams has made a habit scheduling the teams of former UNC players now in the coaching ranks. Now that Wes Miller is the permanent head coach at UNCG it stands to reason the Spartans will end up on UNC’s schedule. A game against UNC Wilmington is also a possibility since former Tar Heel Buzz Peterson is the head coach there.

Retro Roy Williams

I came across this link posted on Inside Carolina. It is Roy Williams’ introductory press conference from when he was hired at Kansas in 1988.

Roy has certainly gotten more polished and practiced at speaking in front of reporters. Clearly he looks a tad uncomfortable in this video but that is not the case now. Then there are some things which never change such as dropping a golf reference, making joke that involved his wife Wanda and referring to himself in the third person. If the man is anything, he is consistent.

Also of note is Roy telling the folks in Kansas he hoped their next press conference to introduce a head coach would be in 30 years. It didn’t work out that way but as it stands right now I don’t see anyone at either UNC or Kansas complaining.

If last year’s NFL Draft was a measure of validation for Butch Davis in illustrating his eye for talent and ability to develop it, this one will point to the various issues that ultimately resulted in Davis’ ouster.

THB Countdown Update

A few years ago I passed the summer by counting down the Tar Heel teams that I actually saw play. In other words I don’t include anything prior to 1982 because I have zero recollection of seeing any of those teams on the court. At the conclusion of every season I update the standings to include the current one. This is a somewhat subjective look at these teams and certainly open for debate. Unlike previous seasons this one falls into place fairly easily.
