ACC Football Week #12: Review

#20 Boston College 38 #21 Maryland 16

I think the five weeks of playing close finally caught up with Maryland. The defense simply was not there today for the Terps and two turnovers leading directly to two touchdowns did not help either. Maryland needed this win to put themselves in the best position for the ACC title game, now that becomes a very difficult task.

UNC 23 NC State 9

More hot seat talk for Chuck Amato. John Bunting leaving on a high note.

Virginia 17 Miami 7

Okay, Miami is really a lot worse than I thought at least they are defensively. If Miami loses to BC on Thursday night they will finish 5-7 and Larry Coker will likely be out of a job.

Georgia Tech 49 Duke 21

Duke has one more chance to avoid an 0-12 season and that is next week at home against UNC. Georgia Tech finished 7-1 in the ACC and looks to use a big win over Georgia to build momentum for the ACC Championship game.

Florida State 28 Western Michigan 20

So the Seminoles get to bowl eligibilty. I do wonder if the FSU boosters offered more money to see if Jeff Bowden would resign effective immediately.

#19 Virginia Tech 27 #14 Wake Forest 6

I wonder had Maryland won if we would have seen a better effort from Wake Forest. Wake obviously had a letdown from the big win last week at FSU. The Hokies have seemingly recovered from some earlier struggles and looks every bit like the Virginia Tech we thought they would be at the start of the season.

So with the Wake and Maryland losses these are the current scenarios for resolving the Atlantic Division.

Wake Forest: Needs to win at Maryland.

Boston College: Needs to win at Miami and needs Wake Forest to lose at Maryland

Maryland: Needs Boston College to lose and to beat Wake Forest

This picture will be clearer after Thursday night. If Boston College loses then the game at College Park is a winner takes all game. If Boston College wins, then Maryland is eliminated from contention on the head-to-head tie breaker even if they beat Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons are the only ones who control their own destiny. The other two need help along with taking care of business.
