Five Days, Football-Free: A Carlyle Cup Update

The annual, bizarrely scored and unpublicized yet corporate-sponsored Carlyle Cup competition kicked off this weekend between North Carolina and the Fount of Evil in Durham. Duke and UNC met in field hockey, with #4 Blue Devils topping #5 Carolina 2-1 in overtime. It was the third straight loss for the Tar Heels, a streak snapped on the next day with a win over Albany. The Heels, 7-3 but 0-3 in conference are sixth in the latest poll, behind three ACC squads, Old Dominion, and Ohio State. All but the Buckeyes are on UNC's schedule this season.

The next Carlyle Cup event is October 8th when the two volleyball teams meet at Carmichael Auditorium. Duke leads the competition 1-0, although should UNC and Duke meet again in the ACC Field Hockey Tournament - or the NCAAs - that point could be reobtained by the Tar Heels. Like I said, it's a bizarre scoring system.

UNC had 49-game winning streak against the Blue Devils from 1981 to 2003. Since then the Heels are 1-6 in the series.
