This is the championship game of the LVI and when the schedule was released everyone assumed this would be #1 UNC vs #6 Louisville. Instead the Cardinals ran into some injuries and were surprised by the Cougars who advance to play UNC following a 78-76 win over UL. Based on the way BYU handled the cupcake portion of their schedule and the dispatched Louisville I can only conclude they are a very dangerous team. If UNC has designs on staying undefeated and bringing home whatever hardware they have from this tournament the defense has to be far better than it was against Old Dominion. Here is what Roy had to say last night about playing BYU:

I think it will be an up-tempo game. They’re really a good basketball team. They pass the heck out of it, the shooters shoot it and they usually make it, so I hope it’s going to be a great game. Again, I’m not going to try to lay coachspeak on you, but if we guard the way we did tonight, they may shoot 90 percent against us.

The Heels had the offense clicking last night but the defense was porous and ODU had too many easy looks at the basket not to mention more offensive rebounds than they knew what to do with. I think BYU is a better team than ODU and it will be on UNC to step up their game and handle the Cougars early. This is a great stretch of games for UNC to be tested. A lot of questions can be answered such as how do they respond on defense tonight after playing so poorly last night? Can they maintain momentum on offense? How do they handle games on short rest? How do they handle switching gears to play a different team in short order after their previous opponent?

I expect a tough battle and the Heels needing to play at top level. Last night was more difficult than I expected and tonight should offer more of the same ahead of two true road games at hostile venues in Columbus and Lexington. Building momentum and confidence is a important at this stage of the season as well as learning how to win.
