Former Heel Cherry For The WKU Job?

According to the local media, former UNC player Scott Cherry is a candidate to replace Darin Horn at Western Kentucky.

Cherry, 37, joined the WKU staff this season after serving for the second time as an assistant at George Mason since the 2003-04 season. He also coached at George Mason from 1999-2002 before spending a year at Tennessee Tech. George Mason reached the 2006 Final Four during Cherry’s tenure.

Cherry also earned an endorsement from Horn, who took over at South Carolina on Tuesday after spending five seasons at WKU.

“There’s no doubt Scott Cherry is ready for the job,” Horn said. “He’s deserving of the job and gives WKU the best opportunity to continue forward. I’d love to see him (get the job) because I still love the school, care about it a great deal and care about the players and I’d like to see what we built continue on.”

Before coaching, Cherry played for Dean Smith at North Carolina and won a national championship as a senior in 1993.

This would be a nice move for Cherry should he land the job.

Meanwhile, Billy Packer, in San Antonio covering the Final Four for CBS, expressed misgivings at Western Kentucky considering the former Heel saying it was risky to try and steal a few years with Cherry in the position.
