Diamond Heels Open NCAA Tournament Play

The UNC baseball team will begin their quest for a fifth straight trip to the College World Series on Friday night in the Norman, OK regional. UNC is seeded 3rd in the bracket and will face #2 seeded California at 8 PM EDT.

Making a fifth straight trip to Omaha is going to be a tough row to hoe. UNC's season, which was expected to be a rebuilding one of sorts, has been a tale of two halves. Following a disastrous trip to Coral Cables where the Heels were swept by Miami to extend a four game losing streak, UNC has won 14 of 18 games. The only major hiccup along the way was a sweep at the hands of #1 Virginia which is not a huge deal. Prior to the recent stretch of winning baseball the Heels were a meager 22-16 and staring at missing the NCAA Tournament. UNC did end up missing the ACC Tournament and yet still made the NCAA Tourney to the consternation of some. The upside to that is UNC got extra rest which no doubt had Roy Williams wishing his team could that some time.

UNC coach Mike Fox will send Tar Heel ace Matt Harvey to the mound vs Cal. Harvey comes in with a 7-3 mark and 3.10 ERA. Here is how the bracket and schedule shapes up:
