I've heard that the basketball office is saying privately that they've already received and accepted an unofficial invite to the NIT. I'm not sure how that works given the posted selection process, but it is worth pointing out that beginning with the 2006 tournament, teams were no longer required to have a winning record. Despite that, no team below .500 has been selected for the NIT.
