No, it's not a bad Jeff Foxworthy game show.
The folks at reesenews.org, which is a project of UNC's School of Journalism and Mass Communication, have developed an interactive web quiz called "Staying in Bounds", in which you are presented with 10 potential rules violation scenarios and it is up to you to make the correct choice to comply with NCAA rules and regulations. The quiz was developed with the help of Lance Markos, head of UNC's athletic compliance department.
I worked in college athletics for five years and had to take a compliance test every year. Even in Division II, the NCAA rulebook was over 400 pages thick back in the mid-90s. Needless to say, after 13 years away from the game, I got a couple wrong.
This quiz puts in perspective the myriad, byzantine rules coaches and student-athletes are expected to know. I'm not saying they shouldn't know them, but as the website notes, it's harder than it looks. Try it a couple of times as there are more than 10 scenarios. You will probably be surprised at what is and what is not a violation.
