I am posting this because it strikes me as both funny and ironic that not only is my favorite college football team being investigated but now the football team from my high school alma mater is facing a probe by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.
WTSB News has learned South Johnston High School football coach Joe Salas has been suspended following an investigation by the NC High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA). On July 19, the NCHSAA notified school officials of violations of the Association’s rules regarding the South Johnston football program. Johnston County school officials declined to specify what those sanctions were, but Terri Sessoms, Public Information Officer, did confirm they are awaiting word on a possible fine.
Sessoms said, "Johnston County Schools takes matters of this nature seriously and is conducting a review of the issues." Sources indicated the football program violated regulations for off season workouts because of body-to-body contact drills.
Efforts to reach Keith Durham, South athletic director, and Joe Salas, Trojans football coach, were unsuccessful Monday afternoon.
Rick Strunk, associate commissioner of communication for the NCHSAA, said it is customary for the school to release information if there are fines or penalties relating to a rules violation.
What the heck? Is Rich Rodriguez running the team down there? Of course football at South Johnston had been horrendous for many, many years. I think they had one playoff appearance when I was in school there back in the early 1990s. Two years ago they went to the state title game which was quite a turnaround from years of futility.
