UNC Finishes Sixth In Director's Cup Standings

I think it might be time to add water polo and give Stanford a run for its money.

The final Learfield Sports Director's Cup Standings are out and UNC finished sixth overall. The Heels, who were as high as 3rd at the start of June slipped three spots and finished behind Duke who was fifth. UNC was seventh last year which followed an usual 11th place finish in 2008-09.

Here is how the rest of the ACC stacked up:

5. Duke
6. North Carolina
7. Virginia
9. Florida St.
17. Maryland
45. Virginia Tech
47. Clemson
51. Miami
59. Georgia Tech
64. Boston College
67. NC State
74. Wake Forest

Four ACC teams in the top 10 was tops among all conferences. The next closest was the Big 12 with two. Stanford won the cup for like the billionth straight time because they get points in many of the non-revenue sports. Of course the baseball team wasn't bad either as UNC saw when the Heels beat the Cardinal in the Super Regional.

It should be pointed out here that despite the issues with the football program, the other UNC teams continue to excel in competition and do so free of academic or NCAA scandals. Yes, the football mess creates a large PR stain than will be tough to scrub away. However there are hundreds of other athletes who wear the Tar Heel uniform and represent the school the right way. They should be applauded.
