Zach Brown Named ACC Co-Linebacker of the Week

Via the ACC.

CO-LINEBACKER – Zach Brown, North Carolina, LB, Sr., 6-2, 230, Columbia, Md. Alternating between outside linebacker and middle linebacker, senior Zach Brown posted a game-high 11 tackles and recorded his first interception of the season in Carolina's 14-7 win over Louisville. Brown, the team leader with 42 tackles, had to call the defensive plays with Kevin Reddick out with an ankle injury. The Tar Heels shut out the Cardinals for three quarters and held Louisville to 273 yards, including just 85 in the second half.

Zach Brown has been impressive this year. As noted by the ACC, he leads the team in tackles with 42 which is nine better than Kevin Reddick. Brown also leads the team in tackles for a loss with 5.0 and is tied for second in sacks with 2.5 to go along with his one interception from Saturday. That is also second on the team tied with several players with Matt Merletti's two INT performance versus Virginia leading the way which is probably not a good sign. Brown is getting it done even if others aren't and he certainly stepped it up with Reddick out. Assuming Reddick comes back healthy maybe the defense can improve but I am not holding my breath at this point.

DT Sylvester Williams would have probably garnered some attention for defensive linemen of the week but Maryland's Joe Vellano had 20 tackles versus Georgia Tech, probably because someone on Randy Edsall's staff has a clue on how to slow down the triple option. No, I'm not bitter or anything.
