Henson Named ACC Player of the Week

For the third straight week a Tar Heel is the ACC Player of the Week.

John Henson takes his turn as the league's top player in the past seven days which I am sure pisses off NC State and Virginia fans to no end.

North Carolina forward John Henson was named the ACC Player of the Week and Duke's Austin Rivers is the conference's Rookie of the Week for the period ending Feb. 26. In earning his third ACC Player of the Week honor this season, Henson had double-doubles in both of North Carolina's road victories. The Tampa, Fla., junior opened the week with 14 points, 13 rebounds and two blocked shots in Tuesday's 86-74 win at NC State. In Saturday's 54-51 victory at 25th-ranked Virginia, Henson had 15 points, 11 rebounds and two blocked shots. Henson currently leads the ACC in rebounding (10.4), blocked shots (3.1) and double-doubles (15)

On one hand, I wouldn't call Henson's overall performance in both games stellar though his numbers certainly support the recognition. Henson struggled against C.J. Leslie in the first half vs NC State and in the first half at Virginia forced up too many jumpers. In both games he had a much improved second halves and his 7-8 performance from the free throw line in Charlottesville was key to the Heels escaping with a win. At any rate, he had a much better week than Mason Plumlee.

The question heading into this week is if Kendall Marshall, Reggie Bullock or one of the past three weeks' recipients of the award can make it four straight Tar Heels. If so, UNC will probably be celebrating an ACC regular season title.
