I won't dwell too much on this one. Why? FSU shot 57% while UNC shot 39% and the Heels had a chance to take the lead late and a shot to tie at the buzzer. This all happening without John Henson on the floor. So if you factor him in I would like to think his 10 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game w0uld have mattered. FSU got some putbacks and scored on the interior with ease at times. Tyler Zeller found himself fighting two Seminoles at times for rebounds and losing the ball. In the end, FSU played a heck of a game so you tip your cap to them and move on the pursuit of the bigger prize.
Despite the loss, which is a lot like losing to Georgia Tech in 1993 without Derrick Phelps or 2009 versus FSU without Ty Lawson, UNC got some good things out of this tournament. James Michael McAdoo had some solid games although he struggled against a tough defensive front today. And if P.J. Hairston can shoot the ball like he did in the second half of this game not to mention the hustle he showed when he was out there I think UNC is in great shape. This was a tough match-up for UNC even with Henson so while you would have liked to have seen the Heels play at a higher level early, they did fight back and make a game of it despite being down 16.
Kendall Marshall and Tyler Zeller were named to the All-Tournament team. Harrison Barnes was second team and all three had solid games, it just wasn't enough. Marshall set a new ACC Tournament record for assists with 31 for the weekend.
With UNC losing like this without Henson, it should not change the NCAA seeding equation or if it does UNC might drop to a #4 overall instead of the #3 overall. Of course you never can tell with the selection committee, especially when there are two teams out there who won their conference tournaments in Missouri and the MSU/OSU winner.
