UNC opened the Larry Fedora era in earnest with the first day of spring practice.
As you said, now the case is closed. How much of a sense of a new beginning is there, especially with the start of spring practice?
I mean, it’s just nice to be able to get out on the field and coach some ball. And to get out there and see our guys compete and see if we can – the three objectives I want to come away with this spring is one, that we get a good grasp of our base offense, defense and special teams philosophies. Two, I want our players to learn how we’re going to practice at North Carolina. I mean, with the energy level that it’s going to take, the intensity level that it’s going to take. You know, and then three I want to identify the players that are going to help us win a Coastal Division championship next year.
Do you think the scholarship cuts have that big of an effect?
Think about it this way: We were already prepared to be at 82 scholarships. So we had already planned for that. So now we’re at 80. So that means we’ll take one more from the offense, and one more from the defense. So when you look at it that way, it’s really not that big of a deal. I mean, you can sit there and cry about it and say, oh, gosh, I don’t know how we’re going to [overcome]. Well, you know what – you put a plan together. And you go work.
Have you considered transferring?
"No, I'm here. Here until I die, man. Let's do it."
As a senior did the opportunity to go elsewhere ever cross your mind?
“Not at all. I’m at home right here in North Carolina. I’ve been here since day one and at the end of the day all you can ask for is to win 12 games and to go any other place I’d be crazy, so I’m at home.”
The word is Larry Fedora was chugging Red Bull and pushing the team on the first day of spring football. It's all about the tempo of the offense with Fedora which might make him the football version of Roy Williams, at least stylistically speaking. By all accounts the team was upset about the bowl ban but not down. The players I have seen quotes from beyond the two included here all talk about coming together and moving forward.
It sounds like Fedora and UNC will start the scholarship reductions with the upcoming season which means two players either on scholarship now or incoming will lose their ride. I can only assume Fedora is anticipating(rightfully so) that after spring practice there will be some attrition. Not everyone will acclimate to the new staff and system or something else will come up to facilitate getting down to 80 scholarships from 82.
In addition to the buzz around the start of spring practice UNC announced it would hold a public scrimmage at Mallard Creek HS in Charlotte.
